From the formal, rigid court dances of the past, ballet has grown into the well-loved romantic, classical, and Twentieth/Twenty-First Century styles of today, and is the roots of jazz, lyrical, modern, and other dance genres.

Ballet dancers are some of the best athletes in the world. Discipine, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and body composition are all important parts of the ballet physique.

An infinite format for expression, ballet has five
positions for the arms, feet, and body.
Every ballet step is one of seven forms
of movement, or a combination of them.

Seven Forms of Movement
  • plier- to bend
  • etendre- to stretch
  • relever- to raise up
  • sauter- to jump
  • tourner- to turn
  • glisser- to glide
  • elancer- to dart

A dancer may amaze an audience with a show of bravado and gravity-defying flights across stage, or effortless turns and balances. Either way, they are seemingly more than human. Using the simplest of mediums, only their body and a surface to dance upon, ballet dancers can express emotions, tell a story, or give life to ideas.

It is an art form, a form of communication that bridges both culture and language. Dancers show the full possibilities of the human body. How is all of this possible? Talent, passion, and a lot of training.
