Bill Albert, founder and Fearless Leader of UNIT, issues a statement each month describing his feelings on the state of Doctor Who fandom in Iowa. He calls these messages his "Ramblings".
Here is his message for December 1999
From: 9th DoctorHello everybody. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all fans Whovian. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season and is around to help us celebrate Who in Iowa in the next millenium. As you saw already the first scheduled event will be held on Saturday, February 26th some where in Des Moines. Thanks and good luck to the members in Des Moines for taking control of this one and we hope to meet with you soon. After that will be Festival with IPTV and Exiled Episode 3 next fall. Lots of exciting things to look forward to. WHO ON IPTV We have seen the last of Doctor Who until the next millenium. There are only two Pertwee stories left to go, Curse of Peladon and Planet of the Spiders, so it'll be mid-February when the Doctor regenerates into Tom Baker. At two episodes a week we should be getting to the Genesis of the Daleks about Festival time. The final episode of Invasion of the Dinosaurs finished off the story nicely. I know the dino's are silly looking but I still think that it was a great story. Loved Benton really taking over and smacking a few superior officers when the opportunity arose. Death to the Daleks was one I hadn't seen for a long time. Was that really only four episodes? Mike and Jeff and I got together for this story and, more than a few times, I found my self asking "Are we in the next episode yet?" IMHO this was the worst Dalek story. Anybody like it? Was this the first time a Dalek self-distructed after failing a mission? I understand the audio adventures that are scheduled from Big Finish Productions next year are especially designed to return the Daleks to their intended place as a strong and truly evil force in the universe. :o) UNIT DECEMBER MEETING We are going to have a first monthly meeting this upcoming Saturday in the cafeteria at Barnes and Noble in Cedar Rapids. We will start between 6:30pm and 7:00pm and eventually head out for a late dinner. I hope anybody who wants to can join us. Of course, we do understand that this is December and the weather can get bad on us very quickly. Drive carefully! LOGO CONTEST The deadline for entries is this up coming weekend. So far, I believe, there are two entries that we'll be voting on. Remember that everyone is welcome and encouraged to join. Send me your entry via private email at UNIT GIVEAWAY!!!!!!!!!! Whenever we get together next, next Saturday if weather permits, we will be giving away some very special prizes, picked at random, to members of UNIT. You NEED NOT BE PRESENT TO WIN!!! We will use a print out of the members list so everyone has an even chance. We have: Frazer Hines "Jamie McCrimmon" autograph. John Levene "Sgt Benton" autograph. Elisabeth Sladen "Sarah Jane" autograph. Sophie Aldred "Ace" autograph. We have to thank Lea "Time Lady Leela" Hayes for getting the John Levene autograph during her trip to Moorehead in fall. Originally I had written to several Doctor Who stars explaining what UNIT was and asking for something we could give away at the meeting in October. Unfortunately I didn't receive any responses until after the event. The Frazer Hines autograph came in about two weeks after that and the Elisabeth Sladen and Sophie Aldred autographs didn't arrive until LAST WEEK! FOR THE RECORD: I received an autographed photo from Elisabeth Sladen quite a few years ago and got Frazer Hines and Sophie Aldred autographs thanks to supporting memberships at Visions. I'm taking my name off the list for these drawings. Does anyone else already have them? Thanks for listening. Take Care Brigade Leader Bill
