Indonesian police fire tear gas at protesters SURABAYA, Indonesia (AP) — Police fired warning shots and tear gas at rock-throwing protesters in Indonesia's second-largest city on Wednesday after thousands demanded death for those trying to impeach President Abdurrahman Wahid for alleged corruption. Police said 20,000 people, many with sickles and knives, besieged the local legislature in Surabaya, the capital of Wahid's home province of East Java, where he is revered not only as the nation's leader but also as a Muslim cleric. Indonesian television networks estimated the size of crowd as several times that. The protesters carried banners reading: "If Wahid falls, the country will be destroyed." One mob hurled stones at and then ransacked a nearby office of Golkar, the party of former dictator Suharto and a major force against Wahid. One police officer was injured before troops pushed the crowd away from the building, witnesses said. About 2,000 riot police and dozens of marines were deployed around the parliament. "If anyone tries to topple Wahid, we will revolt," said protest organizer Mohamad Sujadi. Passions ran high among demonstrators who have been angered by attempts to unseat Wahid after only 15 months as head of state. The crowd cheered when speakers demanded his opponents be mutilated or executed. Wednesday's demonstration was the third consecutive day of pro-Wahid protests after big anti-Wahid rallies in Jakarta last week. It went ahead despite Wahid's calls for calm. An investigative committee last week released a report claiming that Wahid knew about an illegal transfer of $4 million from the state food agency by a former business associate. A subsequent censure approved by the full parliament required Wahid to explain his actions within three months. If he fails to do so satisfactorily, impeachment proceedings can be launched. In a general sense, in the long, venerable life of Electronic Arts' FIFA series, each new version of the game looks and plays a little bit better each year, with a few odd years missing the boat here and there. But with the introduction of Sony's PlayStation 2, EA truly has been able to capitalize in full on the things it's worked so hard on doing each year -- improving AI, creating more realistic looking players and improving their animations, and creating a sense of depth, play balance, and realism.
Believe it or not, the PS2, or EA's early understanding of the PS2, has helped its soccer development team to realize the game's potential more than ever before. With this game, more polygons onscreen doesn't necessarily only mean "more of everything." With FIFA 2001, the game not only looks better because of more polygons, but it animates better, it's more realistic, and it flows very closely along the lines of reality to persuade and entrance our eyes, and therefore, our minds, into believing its fluid lifelike existence. Like a well-orchestrated concerto, EA's FIFA has come together better than ever before, and just like Madden NFL 2001 was to the sport of football, FIFA 2001 has become to the sport of soccer -- the best soccer of its kind on any system.
