News Aceh rebels threaten attacks despite new security pact

Separatist rebels in Indonesia's troubled Aceh province have threatened concerted attacks on security forces, local media reported Sunday, despite a new security pact with Jakarta signed in Switzerland. "All our forces have been instructed to come out from barracks," said Abu Rizal, a spokesman for the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in Pidie district, a flashpoint for clashes between the guerrillas and government troops. "It's all in anticipation of several ugly possibilities," he said, according to the Serambi newspaper. Any police or soldiers who strayed more than 500 metres from their posts would be attacked, he warned. "If they go any further (than 500 metres) we will attack," he said. On Friday, GAM chief commander Abdullah Syafiie threatened to "create chaos all over Indonesia" if police went ahead with plans to send a fresh batch of 6,000 troops to the province. "With all our might we will destroy Jakarta," Syafiie said. Police had said the additional forces were being sent to the troubled province to support the extension a local security operation. There are already 30,000 police and soldiers in Aceh. The threats of intensified action from both sides came despite the signing of a new security pact Friday following peace talks in Switzerland. The pact, designed to replace a ceasefire struck last month and extended until February 20, will remain in force indefinitely and be reviewed periodically, said a joint statement from the two parties in Geneva. Field commanders from both sides will hold regular meetings in Aceh, after an initial meeting by commanders on February 9 and 10 which produced a "detailed practical agreement" to reduce violence, the statement said.

Game of the month
FIFA 2001 Major League Soccer

game of the month

In a general sense, in the long, venerable life of Electronic Arts' FIFA series, each new version of the game looks and plays a little bit better each year, with a few odd years missing the boat here and there. But with the introduction of Sony's PlayStation 2, EA truly has been able to capitalize in full on the things it's worked so hard on doing each year -- improving AI, creating more realistic looking players and improving their animations, and creating a sense of depth, play balance, and realism. Believe it or not, the PS2, or EA's early understanding of the PS2, has helped its soccer development team to realize the game's potential more than ever before. With this game, more polygons onscreen doesn't necessarily only mean "more of everything." With FIFA 2001, the game not only looks better because of more polygons, but it animates better, it's more realistic, and it flows very closely along the lines of reality to persuade and entrance our eyes, and therefore, our minds, into believing its fluid lifelike existence. Like a well-orchestrated concerto, EA's FIFA has come together better than ever before, and just like Madden NFL 2001 was to the sport of football, FIFA 2001 has become to the sport of soccer -- the best soccer of its kind on any system.
