News Eight killed in ethnic fighting in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- Clashes between rival ethnic groups on Indonesia's Borneo island left at least eight people dead and two others injured on Sunday, police said. Fighting broke out between indigenous Dayak people and migrants from other parts of Indonesia in the central town of Sampit, about 450 miles northeast of Jakarta, said local police officer Sgt. Ade. He said mobs had torched three houses and officers were searching for more victims in the ruins. Ade, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, said the area remained tense even after dozens of police officers were deployed on the town's streets. He said it was unclear what triggered the fighting. There has been tension between the two communities for several years, often due to land disputes. Hundreds of people have died in recent years in a series of clashes. The migrants, mainly from the island of Madura, were resettled on Borneo by the government to reduce overcrowding in other parts of Indonesia. Also Sunday, police said a rebel fighter was killed Saturday in a gun battle with security forces in Aceh province on the northern tip of Sumatra island. Insurgents in the oil- and gas-rich region have been fighting for independence since the mid-1970s. At least 6,000 people have been killed in the past decade. Negotiators from both sides met in Switzerland last week and reached a new accord to try to reduce bloodshed after a shaky eight-month-old cease-fire failed to prevent hundreds of deaths.

Game of the month
FIFA 2001 Major League Soccer

game of the month

In a general sense, in the long, venerable life of Electronic Arts' FIFA series, each new version of the game looks and plays a little bit better each year, with a few odd years missing the boat here and there. But with the introduction of Sony's PlayStation 2, EA truly has been able to capitalize in full on the things it's worked so hard on doing each year -- improving AI, creating more realistic looking players and improving their animations, and creating a sense of depth, play balance, and realism. Believe it or not, the PS2, or EA's early understanding of the PS2, has helped its soccer development team to realize the game's potential more than ever before. With this game, more polygons onscreen doesn't necessarily only mean "more of everything." With FIFA 2001, the game not only looks better because of more polygons, but it animates better, it's more realistic, and it flows very closely along the lines of reality to persuade and entrance our eyes, and therefore, our minds, into believing its fluid lifelike existence. Like a well-orchestrated concerto, EA's FIFA has come together better than ever before, and just like Madden NFL 2001 was to the sport of football, FIFA 2001 has become to the sport of soccer -- the best soccer of its kind on any system.
