Illinois 40 is a north-south route running north out of the Peoria area to Sterling, then turning more northwesterly to end at Mount Carroll.
Intersections from north to south:

IL2 at Sterling
US30 at Rock Falls
I-88 at Rock Falls
IL93 near Bradford
IL17 joins from the west just west of Camp Grove
IL17 leaves to the east south of Camp Grove (picture is from the south)
US150 in Peoria
I-74 in Peoria
US24 multiplexed with IL29 in Peoria
IL40 ends at I-74 in East Peoria soon after crossing the Illinois River.
It passes through these towns: Mount Carroll, Chadwick, Milledgeville, Sterling, Rock Falls, Buda, Camp Grove, Bradford, Edelstein, Peoria, East Peoria.
IL40 used to be known as IL88 until most of IL5, including the interchange with what was IL 88, was changed to Interstate 88. Since two routes with the same number intersected each other, confusion ensued. Thus, IL 88 was changed to IL 40, which was its former name anyway.
