Illinois 17 is a very significant route, running almost all the way across the state, from the Indiana border to just across the river from Iowa. East of the Indiana border, IL17 becomes Indiana State Route 2.
Intersections from east to west:
IL17 begins at the Indiana State Line
IL17 joins IL1 south near Grant Park
IL114 at Momence
IL1 breaks off south near Sun River Terrace
I-57 at Kankakee
IL50 joins from the north for about 1/4 mi. in Kankakee
Then IL50 breaks off to go south south, only to end at US45/52
In fact, IL17 meets US45/52 next- the 2 routes join IL17 west in downtown Kankakee
Then the two federal routes break off together toward north
Shortly after, IL17 meets IL113 at that route's eastern end
IL47 at Dwight

IL17 breaks off of IL251 to head west again

IL26 in Lacon
It joins IL29 north briefly at Sparland
Then IL29 breaks off
IL17 follows IL40 north*
It breaks off near Camp Grove

Later, it breaks off at Toulon
IL17 follows IL78 north a little way
IL17 breaks off soon after and heads west again
IL180 at its northern end
IL17 joins US34 west at Galva
Then it breaks off, once again
IL82 at its southern end
I-74 near Woodhull
Next, it joins US150 north through Alpha
IL17 breaks off of that route, too
US67 at Viola
IL94 joins from the north into Aledo
once in Aledo, IL94 heads south again
then IL17 ends at New Boston, on the Mississippi River.
It passes through these towns: Grant Park, Momence, Kankakee, Dwight, Wenona, Lacon, Sparland, Camp Grove, Wyoming, Toulon, La Fayette, Galva, Woodhull, Alpha, New Windsor, Viola, Aledo, Joy, New Boston.
Notable places: Illinois 17 runs past the Illinois State Correction Center at Dwight, a women's prison, complete with playground! It's next to a cemetery! Talk about joyous...
This is just west of Dwight.
*-There's an excellent apple orchard farm for autumn-type recreation at the corner of IL17 and IL40 in Speer, Illinois, just minutes west of the Illinois River.
