Note that all part of Madison County and tract of territory on the Waters of the Kentucky River above the said county of Clay shall be annexed to and added to the County of Floyd. CLAY COUNTY was named in honor of General Green Clay, a resident of Madison County, probably a welsh extraction. General Clay was born in Powhatan County, Virginia, August 14, 1757, He was the son of Charles Clay and decended from John Clay, a british grenadier, who came to Virginia during Bacon's Rebellion and declined to return to England when the King's Troops were sent back. It is not definitly known whether this ancestor was from England or Wales, but the prevailing belief is that he was born in Wales.General Clay came to Kentucky in early youth and first few years after his arrival were spent in examining the county and aiding in exspelling the Indians. He then entered the Office of James Thompson, a commissioned surveyor where he thought more thoroughly studied the principles and acquired the art of surveying. Soon he was made a deputy surveyor and became acquainted with the lands in the upper portion of the County of Kentucky. He became a very large landowner not only in Knetucky, but in other states, particularly in Lousiana. NOt withstanding his great responsibilities in connection with his land business, General Clay devoted several years of his life to politics. Before Kentucky was a state he was elected a delegate to the General Assembly of Virginia; was a member of the convention that formed the constitution of Kentucky. After the state was admitted into the Union, he represented Madison County many years in each branch of the Legislature. He was a Major General of the Militia and took an active part in the War of 1812. He died October 31, 1826.
