Goals

In February 2001, a friend of his remarked that she could not date someone who didn't have goals. The goals didn't have to be major things, but the fellow had to have goals. Brian figured most women must think about the same way. He certainly had goals; he just did not have them "codified."

In mid-Spring 2002, he took "Leadership & Interpersonal Skills" at the Frostburg University Center in downtown Hagerstown. One assignment was to come up with major goals and set target dates on them. So he made his first list of goals.

In the Fall of 2003, he began to reassess his goals again. In late winter and early March of 2004, he restated his goals.

By March 2008, most of the future was decidedly taken away. The goals now are simply to stay employed and run out the clock.

2004 Goals
In 2003, his life--ever so close to The Next Step--imploded. He lost a lot, including something inside of himself. But he knows must regroup and go on. He relists his goals here, by necessity:

1) Keep the job at the developer's until he has a good job with a future.
Check: He's survived over ½ a year so far.

2) Grow spiritually. That is, have a better relationship with God.
Check: He has a long way to go--and knows he may not be a very spiritual person. He read the New Testament all the way through--a goal for a long time, but is stuck in Exodus in the OT. How ironic. Friends have taken him under their wing, though he won't convert to their Seventh-day Adventism.

He feels keeping the job is Goal #1, only in that it's easier to grow spiritually with a roof over his head and food in his tummy. He knows others would disagree.

3) Get the good job with room for advancement, where he can make a difference, and is respected.
Miss so far: The job market is tight, his skills are few, and his background is scant. But he continues.

4) Make new friends.
Miss so far: This is not a condemnation of his current friends--or most of the people he has befriended in his Hagerstown years. He has lost his "hanging out" friends. He only has "go visit" friends right now. He needs to do things with other people. The more he endures this "transition period," as Denitsa called it, the more he thinks this goal should be Number 1.

5) Find a new place to live away from Hagerstown.
Miss: Not yet, though if he does not find a good job with a future by midsummer, he does plan to leave Hagerstown. The apartment building is to be put up for sale. And how long should one beat a dead horse?

6) Start taking junior-level courses again.
Miss so far: The job and stability must come first. 7) Pursue his hobbies and new volunteer opportunities.
Miss: His HCC days are winding down--what will he do?
yet check: He has started writing a short story. Friends say it sucks--yet he continues....

8) Get a passport. He still enters a lot of travel sweepstakes--yeah, right.
Miss: He was thinking if he went abroad now, it would be to the British Isles or Ireland. But Denitsa is back in Eastern Europe, and she'll be there a while. She's invited him over.... it's something he's really thinking about.

If he must repeat life over, he figures why not repeat an adventure from someone else's life?

He's getting his passport photo taken this summer....

9) Get the girl. And keep her. And live happily ever after.
Miss: Well, he is pretty much looking for a kind, sweet, cheerful lady who will be supportive of him, and for whom he will also be a boon. He has two suspects.

10) Save money. This, of course, conflicts with all the above.
Miss: It's hand-to-mouth survival right now.

11) Sponsor an international child. As it looks like he's not going to have kids--where's his woman, anyway?--he would like to positively improve a child's life. He knows he has to be financially secure first.

2002 Goals
A slightly revised list, as taken from the handed-in class assignment:

1) Keep the job at the library.
Check: He stayed until the job description and the supervisior changed, and left amicably. He survived his first Fall semester, when all those students returned, and that Fall's invoicing. "Speed it up, Earl!"

2) Find a new place to live away from Hagerstown.
Miss: Not yet, though if I do not find a good job with a future by June, I do plan to leave Hagerstown. How long does one beat a dead horse?

3) Get a car.
Check: Yes, finally, Marie--new, with electric locks, windows, and mirrors, and a CD player to boot! Acquired on Saturday, 27 July 2002.

4) Start taking junior-level courses.
Check: After much research, he took Social Demography at Frostburg State University in Fall '01 and continued to take a class a semester thru Fall '02. Possible futures: Urban Planning (though the more he lives in Hagerstown, the less he sees a reason for any city....), Marketing, or Public Administration.
and miss: I may not even complete the one course needed to get an Associate's degree in Business Administration in Spring 2004. I do miss classes--I met most of my friends through them.

5) Have much needed oral surgery.
Check: On Friday, 24 August, Brian underwent surgery to remove his left wisdom teeth. After opening his gum in the front, it was determined he had just enough bone left to secure a dental implant. After drilling into his jawbone, he was also fitted with an anchor that will eventually support the post (screw). Two more operations to go on that! In Early February, he got his gum reopened, and the post and the "healing cap" was installed. After getting his tooth color matched--and having to send the tooth back because it was a bit small, in early April he awaited a "full mouth." On Wednesday Morning, 10 April, he finally got his tooth.

6) Take a few days in September 2001 to go to Lewes, Delaware and Cape May, New Jersey. (This could have been replaced by another location, as options were evaluated, but no trip was taken then.)
Miss: He regrets this was not done, as a fellow he was going to see passed away in Fall '01.
Well, Check: He did get to go to Lewes for three days in late August 2002 and saw the fellow's widow. He also went while there for a day trip to Cape May. He hoped to revisit both towns.
and check again: Brian spent a couple of days there in June 2003.

7) Get a passport. Entering a lot of travel sweepstakes could make this necessary. Yeah, right.
Miss: Not so far--though he thought--mistakingly--he might need one in the summer of 2003....

8) Get a hottie.
Miss: Well, am pretty much looking for a cheerful lady who can tolerate me.... But I have dated a couple of hotties. Just could not keep the hottie.

9) Save money. This, of course, conflicts with all the above.
Check: Surprisingly, even with the above expenses, money did slowly accumulate until early 2003.

10) Continue to grow spiritually.

11) Sponsor an international child. As it looks like I'm not going to have kids--where's my woman, anyway?--I would like to positively improve a child's life.
