chapter eight

Rayna and Daniel walked into a sandwich shop downtown and began looking at the menu posted on the wall.
“ What can I get you?” The girl behind the counter asked.
“ A veggie sandwich on wheat and a bottle of chocolate milk to go.” She answered. The girl gave her her food, and Rayna and Daniel left. Walking down the crowded streets, Rayna spotted a bench. She placed Daniel beside her, and then began to eat, pausing occasionally to give Daniel some chocolate milk.
“ Hey.” A shadow fell over them. Rayna looked up.
“ Hey Rob, you scared me.”
He blushed. “Sorry. Who’s this?”
“ My nephew, Daniel. I’m baby-sitting.”
“Cool.” He stood there awkwardly for a minute. “ Um, I need to talk to you, but I guess it can wait until later, ‘cause you’re busy and everything.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I’ll call you later, ok?” “Ok,” she said, watching him practically run off. Looking at her watch, she decided it was time to go back, so she packed up their stuff and left.

“Rayna!” Her mother called to her as she entered her house after dropping Daniel off.
“ Yeh?”
“ Come here a sec.” She walked down the hall to the kitchen, where her mother was cooking dinner.
“ You didn’t tell me Chris was moving back!”
“ I just found out this morning.”
“ Oh. Well, that’s great news!”
“ Yeh.”
“ Your brother is coming for dinner. Do you want to invite anyone?”
Rayna laughed. “Mom, could you be any more obvious?”
“ C’mon, you know you want to.”
“ Chris is busy tonight. He’s going to dinner with his parents.”
“ Ok. Go get cleaned up.”
Rayna ran upstairs, not feeling a bit guilty about her lie. Her brother was an ass, although he was a protective ass. Even thought she was 17 and he was 19, he was always grilling her boyfriends. He was even worse with her 14-year-old sister, Robin. She always avoided having guys over when her brother was around, even guys like Jake and Drew.
About ten minutes later, the doorbell rang. Her brother, Andy, had arrived. Then ate an uneventful dinner, and Rayna returned to her room.
The phone rang a little while later, while Rayna was painting. Knowing it was Rob, she didn’t answer it. She was confused-she didn’t know if she wanted to get back together with Chris, or if she wanted Rob. There was a knock at her door. Robin entered, holding a phone out to Rayna.
“ Hello?”
“ Hey…it’s Rob.”
“ Hey.”
“ Um…do you want to take a walk?”
“ Yeh, ok.”
“Ok, meet me at the park on your corner in 10 minutes.”
“ Ok, bye.” She hung up the phone, grabbing her stuff. She spotted the picture on her wall of Chris and her at the beach, arms around each other, and remembered something. She suddenly knew what her decision was.
“Rayna!” Rayna turned to find Rob running across the park. “Hey,” he said.
“ Hey.”
“ Ready?”
“Yup.”
They began to walk. Once away from the traffic, Rob began to talk.
“ Ok, so, I was wondering if you’d like to go out sometime. Like, on a date. If you don’t want to, that’s ok too, you know…I mean, I know Chris is moving back, and, um…”
“ Rob?”
“ Yeh?”
“ Thanks, but-“
“ Yeh, I figured, I just thought I’d give it a shot. Sorry.”
“ No, I’m sorry.”
There was an awkward silence.
“Uh, I better go. I’ll se you a practice tomorrow, right?”
“Yeh,” Rob said. “Bye.”
“ Bye.”
