you are here >> tongue piercing

- procedure -

1. A clamp is placed on the tongue to hold it in place and the tongue is stuck out as far as it can go.

2. A marker is used to mark the place on the tongue that will be pierced.

3. A hollow needle is stuck through the tongue at an angle. (the needle is inserted at an angle so it does not puncture the frenum)

4. The Surgical Stainless Steel barbell, usually 14 gauge is inserted into the hollow needle.

5. The hollow needle is then pulled completely through the tongue, leaving only the barbell in place. The bottom ball is then screwed on and the piercing is complete.

- aftercare -

For the first few days some swelling of the tongue can be expected. Swelling varies from person to person. You should refrain yourself to a liquid or semi-liquid diet for the first week or two. Eating normally will delay the healing process and possibly cause more extreme swelling. A few good food choices include: Malt-o-meal, Apple Sause, Yogurt, Popsicles, Carnation instant breakfast.

You should clean the piercing three times a day, and after each time you eat, drink (anything except water), or smoke. To clean the piercing, thoroughly wash out the mouth with Listerine mouth wash.

The jewelry can be changed about 3-4 weeks after it was pierced. Barbells are generally used, they vary in color and gauge.
