PHYLLIS H. JONES
Sitting around singing and visiting during cafe working hours would not appear to be
a good way to be discovered for your God-given talent. For Phyllis Jones, however
it proved to be her ticket into her success a head backup singer for the Webster County Opry.
When business was slow in her Fordland, Missouri cafe that she owned for ten years she would turn
up her radio and friends, neighbors and people from around the community would join together
in a harmony that still rings as pure with Phyllis as it did those years ago. The customers of
Phyllis' cafe always enjoyed her singing and the rich meaning that she put into
each vocal stance that she portrayed. Phyllis, a native of Liverpool, England, came to America
when she was wed to an American soldier. She became a citizen of the United States in 1969.
Phyllis has taught her fellow backup performers the many lessons of showmanship that were so
instrumental in getting her this far in her musical success. Following a chance that began in
the Spring of 1998, Phyllis landed a position as a guest performer with the Opry. By April,
Phyllis' musical career was really blossoming with a group called The Nicketeers. Audience
members raved over the unique quality of the vocal quintet performance of Raymond Hayden's song
God Made a Man. It soon became one of the Opry's most requested songs and so Phyllis
started making show debuts with the group. When Phyllis' name is mentioned, images instatly
emerged of a talented woman with a great soprano voice. Phyllis is a Opry star
is every sense and she knows how to work and please her crowd. And whe she's not at the Opry
performing she can be found traveling, playing her omnicord or singing in local church choirs.
She began her musical career at an early age when she performed as social events and funerals.
Phyllis retired from her life as a cafe owner in 1995 and now enjoys spending her golden years
kicking up hear heals. She has been very active over the years in many organizations that were proud to count her as a member they included The Eastern Star, Community Choir, Fordland Saddle Club, Senior Citizens Christmas Dinner of which she organized for 7 years. Phyllis greatest honor finally came in April of 1998 when she was invited to become a member of the Opry. She now glows as she enters the stage and it is clear that she will continue to sine in her many years ahead as lead vocal for the Opry's official backup group The Gooseberrie Pickers.
