The Abbey, Oldham - 20th April 2001

Well our second gig was certainly an improvement on our first. In fact it was our best gig ever! Saying that we have only played 2 gigs in total so far, however this gig did in fact kick a lot of ball. For one thing we had a good PA system provided by the headlining band Eyes Wide Shut and for another thing we actually stayed in time for at least a minute!!

We arrived at the Abbey at 6pm and stayed there for an hour and a half before driving back to Tyldesley to get our drum kit because the one that arrived for us to use was similar to a plate of crusty ball. The race was on, as we needed to be back for 9pm to play our set, and worst of all we got lost on the way back!! Anyway eventually we ended up in Tyldesley, obtained our drum kit in a swift operation and headed back to the Abbey. We arrived back at 9.03pm, set our stuff up and dived head first into our set. The PA was awesome and we actually had 2 mics this time. I could hear everything really well, and was surprised by the seemingly sincere applause that didn’t die down during our set. In fact it got louder for songs such as “The Emo Song” and Fraggle Rawk. Our set was a good length too… so it didn’t irritate people by going on too long.

It was strange playing the Abbey. I still don’t really understand why we really ended up playing there, but we did and people appeared to like us. We played with a band called Eyes Wide Shut who were just starting out. Our sound levels were brilliant and we actually played well this time. “Played well” simply means we played as well as we can… we suck and will never actually be able to play well. It was fun being able to play in front of total strangers, cause we actually got a valid response to our music, as opposed to the bias present at the Hollywood Bar which was jammed full of our allies. Considering all that happened (being VERY ill beforehand, getting lost, having a ball drum kit, not having our friend and contact Dave at the gig, being in front of strangers) I have to say I’m very proud of the way we played and that the night was totally worth it. Hell we might have even got paid if we had stuck around for a while but we didn’t. All in all it was a really fun night! Monday we’re off to the Redhouse on the last leg of our tour… for now just humour yourself at the pictures below…
