Let's Talk About Friends

Let's face it. Everybody needs a friend. People have differing definitions and perceptions of what a friend is. To me, a friend is someone who you associate with casually (outside of class, work, and other unstimulating situations) on a daily basis. A friend is someone who you can be yourself with, just kick back and have a good time, and not feel awkward. I never really realized what a friend was until I came to college. I threw the term "friend" around too loosely. Sadly enough, I forgot what a real friend was. My "friends" were those people who I would talk to in school or on the streets. The conversations were just about normal everyday things. Now, I know that the definition of a friend runs somewhat deeper than that.

A friend is someone who e-mails you or calls you to see what you're doing. They take an interest in the personal things going on in your life, and inquire about them. They will stop you and say, "Hey, what do you want to do today?" They'll help you out of compromising and unfortunate situations, without even giving it a second thought or expecting anything in return. If you need three hundred dollars in a hurry, (for unfortunate reasons)they will make sure you have the money that you need. THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE! I owe you one. That is a friend.

This probably won't make a lot of sense to many people who will read this. It is just something I need to touch on. My advice to others would be to look at the people around you. Ask yourself which ones have really been there for you and really took an interest in your life. You may be surprised at what you find out. Also, don't distance yourself from the ones that have been there for you through everything. You will regret it in the future. Stay true to yourself and your true friends will stay true to you. To my friends near and far:

Thank you for all of the fun times. I hope to have many more fun times together. I hope to be there for my friends, just as my friends have been there for me. No matter how close or how far apart we are, the memories of the fun times we've had are with us forever.
