When I tell people that I am a professional wrestling fan, they react in different ways. Many people say, "that's cool," while others ask me, "You do know it's fake, don't you?" Um, please don't insult my intelligence. I began watching wrestling as a little boy. My dad would be watching "Saturday Night's Main Event" in the living room, and I would sneak out of bed and watch it with him. Seeing the late Andre the Giant putting his hands on my then-hero Hulk Hogan got me pumped up. It was a feeling I couldn't explain. My interest grew from there as I would watch WWF Primetime Wrestling, Superstars, All American Wrestling, and even WCW Saturday Night. Understand, however, that a lot has changed since those days. Most of the programs have all been renamed numerous times.
The biggest change that wrestling has made lately is that there is no longer a true hero and a true bad guy. There is such a grey area that exists in the world of sports entertainment today. The WWF also became the innovators of the edgy nature that professional wrestling has today. The core wrestling audience, consisting of 18 to 35 year olds, doesn't want its' intelligence insulted. The story lines are complex and reflect society in many ways. The soap opera appeal to professional wrestling keeps me watching.
The World Wrestling Federation has always been, and will continue to be my favorite wrestling organization...even when WCW was flourishing. Vince McMahon and the WWF has faced some unsurmountable odds throughout the years, but they've managed to conquer the competition. Hell, now they're the only major promotion! This is thanks to creativity, brilliant marketing, and building superstars from the ground up.
I enjoy watching wrestling because it is entertaining and it is very competitive. A critic will tell you that "it's fake." Yes, it is, but the moves are real and people do get hurt and careers can end. All I can say, in conclusion, is that it's a great time to be a wrestling fan. I am 23 years old and proud to be hooked on wrestling. There are worse addictions, aren't there? Anyway, thank you WWF, WCW, and professional wrestling in general for providing us with something interesting to do on Monday Nights!
