Angling

The ring of the rise fades as your fly line cuts through the breeze. Your fly settles on the water with the finesse of a hummingbird lighting on a delicate flower stem. It bobs up and down on the water's surface as it drifts toward the spot where you last saw the big fish. A knot begins to form in your stomach as you ask yourself, "Did it pass him?" Suddenly, the fly is savagely attacked as the big brown inhales it. Your rod tip arcs over as the big fish dives and heads for parts unknown. The war is on.

This scenario plays itself out time after time, season after season on northern New Hampshire's fine trout rivers. We offer a variety of fly fishing services. And we also blend any combination of them to create a weekend, three day, or week-long package to suit every need and budget. We also provide fly fishing instruction both with guided fly fishing trips, and in our annual weekend fly fishing school on the Androscoggin River.

Flies are always available for purchase during all guided fly fishing activities.

Float Trips

By far the most popular of our angling services are the float trips on the Upper Androscoggin River. This fine river affords excellent angling for rainbow, browns and big brookies of the 3 to 5 lb. range, known locally as "squaretails". Oh, and let's not forget about the landlocked salmon. The high-flying antics of these aerobatic fish whenever encountered are a highlight of the trips.

The Androscoggin offers opportunity at trophy fish, but also provides more action in between with some very nice fish. There are also other species such as smallmouth bass and whitefish, northern pike, chain pickerel and yellow perch in the river. Though we target trout, you sometimes don't know what you'll find on the line till it gets to the boat.

The Androscoggin is a very picturesque river, one spectacular panorama after another will greet you at each bend in the river. There are most always wildlife sightings of either moose, deer, bear, eagles, ospreys, hawks, herons, and ducks of many species. The float trips done aboard our handsome 17' McKenzie driftboat (fittingly christened "The Brookie Barge") promises to be an experience that will provide you with a lifetime of fond memories.

Lunches are provided with full day float trips. Note that the prices below reflect the individual cost. There is an additional $25 charge for each additional angler. Party size is limited to two adults, or two adults and one child.

Full Day Androscoggin River Float Trip -- $250

Half Day Androscoggin River Float Trip -- $200

Sorry but no float trips are available in the uppermost reaches of the Connecticut River. (please read Walk/Wade section below) However, we are in the process of arranging access to some productive stretches which are further downstream. Please contact us for availability.

Walk/Wade Fly Fishing

Many of the prime fly fishing sections of the Upper Connecticut River are not accessible or floatable with driftboats, and as many of these areas provide some excellent angling, we offer walk/wade fly fishing. We, of course, offer walk/wade fly fishing on the Upper Androscoggin River also. The remoteness of many of these sections of both rivers affords the angler with peaceful surroundings to enjoy their day in Wild New Hampshire. Please note that as with our other guided fly fishing activities, the prices below reflect the individual cost. There is a $25 charge for each addtitional angler. Party size is limited to two anglers unless other [previous] arrangements are made.

Full Day Androscoggin River Walk/Wade Trip -- $220

Half Day Androscoggin River Walk/Wade Trip -- $180

Full Day Connecticut River Walk/Wade Trip -- $250

Half Day Connecticut River Walk/Wade Trip -- $200

Float Tube, Canoe & Kayak Fishing

One look at the northern tier of New Hampshire on a topographic map will show that it's dotted with lakes and ponds. Most of them are remotely located, so you can fish in complete peace. Many harbor large native brook trout. Looking at the photo at right, can you imagine being towed around a trout pond in a float tube by one of these football sized and shaped brookies?

Float tubing has become very popular in the past decade. And for good reason. Once the water begins to warm in mid-season, some very good angling action can be had fishing from a float tube or canoe. (Not that the early or late season is unproductive!) The fish generally head down toward the bottom to the cooler water. Though this kind of fishing is a whole new ball game, it can produce some very good results as you can see. These two beauties weighed in at 4-3/4 lbs.+ and just under 5 lbs. If you haven't yet, give float tubing a try, you'll like it I guarantee. Imagine fishing in a half submerged La-z-boy recliner... I'm set up for parties of three...

We recently got into the fast growing kayak fishing craze that's sweeping the nation. The new fishing kayaks that are being manufactured in recent years are remarkably stable, and they offer anglers a stealthy platform to fish from, while affording mobility not possible with float tubes or kick boats. Here's a photo of a little striper I took from a kayak recently. We may be offering kayak fishing for stripers like this one in the future.

Kayak fishing really enhances the fly fishing experience, and most any fishing trip. Kayak parties are limited to two anglers.

Fly fishing from canoes has long been a tradition on New England trout ponds. Canoe parties are limited to two anglers.
