Fly Fishing Instruction

Fly Fishing is fast becoming America's number one outdoor sport. It has a lure all its own. There's something romantic about fly fishing. Maybe its the graceful rolling of the line to and fro as a seasoned fly caster works the line. Or maybe it's the noble notion of giving the fish the advantage by using fly tackle. Maybe it's fishing the old fashioned way. In recent years, Robert Redford's popular film "A River Runs Through It" has been responsible for a good number of people giving the sport a try. Whatever fly fishing's appeal, droves of fly fishing enthusiasts take to the stream annually. And when you ask them why they love the sport, you get as many reasons as there are stars in the sky.

Yet for others, fly fishing becomes a by-word. (It's got too many letters to become a four letter word). Trying to learn the dynamics of fly casting becomes a frustrating endeavor. Others give up because of the exasperation they feel when fish are rising for flies everywhere around them, except for the one that's at the end of their line. And soon, the fly rod finds a permanent home in the broom closet. Well friends, this shouldn't be!

Years ago, I began to realize from conversations that a lot of folks I knew either wanted to take up fly fishing, but were intimidated to try because of perceived difficulty, or they had given up in desperation. As a result, I saw the need for a source of affordable fly fishing/casting instruction. So we now offer a weekend fly fishing course or seminar on the Androscoggin River. It's scheduled to coincide with the river's famous "alderfly" hatch so that participants will have hands on instruction while fishing over large actively feeding trout and salmon. After all, wouldn't you be encouraged to continue fly fishing if you actually caught some good fish?

This season's Fly Fishing Seminar will take place on the weekend of June 27 - 29, 2003. Participants will get two hours of classroom instruction, followed by two days of hands on instruction on the water. The course content will touch on everything that is needed to get into the sport. Among the topics covered are: Fly Fishing History, Evolution of Fly Tackle & Gear, Equipment Selection, Set Up, Use & Maintenance, Fly Fishing Applications & Strategies, Fly Casting Dynamics & Techniques, Safe Wading, Stream Anatomy & Reading the Environment, Trout Biology & Behavior, Basic Aquatic Entomology, Fly Patterns & Selection, Catch & Release, Outdoor Ethics, and more.

The seminar includes dinner on Saturday night, and each participant will be given six fly patterns for this particular hatch. The cost of the seminar is a very reasonable $150, which is about a quarter of the price of similar weekend fly fishing schools. (We're not trying to retire next week! We just want to see you get into the sport and like it). Class size is limited in order to ensure that participants receive proper individual attention. Thus first-come-first-serve pre-registration is required with a 50% non-refundable deposit. (We're willing to work with individuals who, for some reason or another cannot attend. We'll gladly apply the deposit to the following seminar, or to any guided activity).

Participants are responsible to provide their own (1) fly rod, reel, line and leader, (2) waders or hip boots, and (3) bag lunches for meals other than the Saturday night dinner. We do have a small amount of equipment available for rent for those who would like to try the sport before investing in equipment. Please inquire about equipment rental when contacting us for registration.

Registrants will receive confirmation of their reservations, along with the seminar particulars (e.g. directions and time for Session 1, maps, and other instructions). As stated earlier, class size is limited so don't delay, contact us today, and see for yourself why fly fishing is so popular. If you should happen to miss out on the seminar, or would like exclusive instruction, we offer it with any guided fly fishing trip for an extra cost of $25. We hope to spend some quality time on the water with you this season.
