SHEA STADIUM

Is that a picture of Ebbets Field? No, its the future home of the New York Mets. On April 23, 1998 Mets co-owner Fred Wilpon unveiled the model of a Ebbets Field replica that he hoped the Mets would call home by the 2003 season. The new ballpark would be built right in the parking lot where Shea Stadium currently is located. Shea Stadium would then possibly would revonated and the Jets would move in. Construction has not yet to begin because there is a hold on regarding who would provide the money to pay for construction, the Mets or the city.

The new stadium would be built to seat 45,000 and up to 60,000 during other non-baseball events. Its features would include a retractable dome roof and a retractable field. The field would be able to mechanically roll out into the parking lot to make the stadium capable of holding other sporting events and concerts. The replica stadium would also feature unsymmetrical outfield fences, similiar to Ebbets Field. The stadium would most likely be named after a coporate sponsor who contribute financially to the construction of the Mets' new home. Some have said that the Mets are planning on naming the ballpark Jackie Robinson Stadium.
