Belgorod is a regional, industrial and cultural centre of Belgorod region. It's located in the South of the Central Black-Earth Zone of Russia, at a distance about 800 kilometers to the South from Moscow. The name "Belgorod" in English means "White city". It's because the city of Belgorod is situated on the large deposits of chalk. 
Belgorod is a very old city, it was founded in XVI century. For many centuries it has been looking from chalk hills in the bright waters of the river Seversky Donets. Now it's a part of the Central Black-Earth Economic Region of the Russian Federation, also the Belgorod Oblast is a part of the Central Federal District of Russian Federation. The Belgorod region is located in the South-Western part of the Central Russian Upland in the basin of the rivers Dnieper and Don in the forest-steppe zone on a hilly plain. The climate here is temperate continental, winter is rather mild with snowfalls and frequent thaws.The average yearly temperature differs from +5.4°C in the North to +6.7°C in the South. The main part of population of the Belgorod region are Russians but there are many Ukrainians especially near the Russian-Ukrainian border. The average population density is 46.5 people per 1 square kilometer. Belgorod is a quickly developing industrial and cultural centre of Russia. The most developed branches of industry are: the mining and metallurgical industry, machine-building industry, building materials production, food industry and agriculture. Now Belgorod is one of the most beautiful places of Central Russia. There are many monuments of Wold War II in Belgorod. The most well-known of them are the Belgorod Diorama and the memorial of the Kursk Duga battle in Prokhorovka.

The main educational centres are the Belgorod Technological Academy, the Belgorod State University, the Belgorod Agricultural Academy.  The Belgorod University The Belgorod Drama Theatre is well-known all over Russia. It is named in honour of the famous Russian actor of XIX century, Mickhail Schepkin, who was born near Belgorod.  The Belgorod Drama Theatre Also there are very many Orhodox cathedrals, churches and holy places in the Belgorod region. Many of cathedrals are very old, some of them are restored during last years and also new churches are built here every year.
