History of Belgorod | |
Belgorod was found in the XVI-th century in the reign of tsar Feodor Ioannovich (the son of Ioann the Terrible) as a big fortress. In those distant times the city stayed just on the border of the Russian state and "The Wild field", the large steppe, where a lot of nomad tribes lived. For many years Russian warriors on the walls of the fortress kept the border and defended the Russian state from many invasions of wild hordes of nomads. Belgorod in XVI-XVII centuries In XVIII-XIX centuries the 12th Uhlan regiment and the 35th Dragoon regiment were formed in Belgorod. Soldiers from Belgorod fought under the banners of field-marshal count Suvorov and participated in the campaign of 1812 year and many other wars of XVIII-XIX centuries. Belgorod in XVIII-XIX centuries The XXth century was very rich in very different events: revolutions, wars, peaceful life and many other happenings. But the biggest event for Belgorod became the Second World War. Here, near Belgorod there is a small village, Prokhorovka by name. In July-August of 1943 near Prokhorovka the biggest tank-battle in the Human History took place. It was the centre of the well-known Kursk battle or the so-called "Kursk Duga". This battle was one of the greatest victories of the Red Army in the World War II. And in the evening of August, 5, 1943 in Moscow was the first salute and fireworks in honour of this victory. It was the beginning of the new tradition to celebrate every new big victory with salutes. And from that day our city has been often called "The city of the first salute".
