Chalk hills near Belgorod Chalk hills near Belgorod

The land of Belgorod is known by its long and interesting history, very many historical places and memorials, cities and towns in that you can see the traces of long history next to modern buidings, airports and railway stations. These two sides of this land stand so close to each other that sometimes it seems the History still lives here.

At first about the name of the city and province. «Belgorod» in English means «White city» . It's because the city of Belgorod is situated on the large deposits of chalk. And now near Belgorod you can see large hills of chalk.

In XV-XVI centuries the Belgorod land was the border of the Russian state with the so-called «Wild Field» there the nomad tribes: Pechenegs, Polovtsi and others lived and very often made raids on the Russian territory. To defend the Russian border the long line of fortification called "The Belgorod Abatis Line" was built.
Only traces of this fortication line remained till our days.

Though Belgorod suffered very much during the Second World War there are still many old buildings, cathedrals and other sights on the city of Belgorod and the Belgorod region. For last 10 - 15 years many of them were restored and also many new ones were built. And also very many buildings, houses, plants and whole new districts appeared here after the war.
So in spite of its long history and great destruction in the last war our Belgorod can look new and old at the same time.
