& CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Points scores are separate from the Club Championship competition. Awards of monthly placegetters' ribbons and overall points score trophy winners are usually keenly contested. All points score events are conducted as scratch races, i.e. all competitors start on the sound of the starter's gun or signal and swimmers gain points throughout the season for time improvement (not for placing) in each race the contest. The basic rules of each of
the points scores are as follows:
1. Each club night a swimmer is permitted to swim two swims in No.1 Point Score and one swim in either No.2 or No.3 Point Score (but not both), i.e. a total of three swims per night. 2. No.1 Point Score is conducted over the sprint distances of 12.5m, 25m, 50m or 100m. Each night there will be a freestyle event and a form stroke event. Swimmers can only swim one race in each stroke. Progression times apply to the 12.5m and 25m events, i.e. swimmers who have equaled or broken 14 sec. for 12.5m or 28 sec. for 25m on three occasions must progress to a longer distance. 3. No.2 Point Score is designed to give younger, or non-championship, swimmers and extra swim each night. It is held over the sprint distance of 25m only and any stroke can be swum. It is open to any member and each swimmer is entitled to one swim per night. 4. No.3 Point Score is designed for squad swimmers or those wishing to swim longer distances. Each swimmer is allowed one swim per night, in any stroke of their choosing for 200m, and either freestyle or IM for 400m. To enter in any of the points score events, swimmers are required to fill in a race entry card and place it in the entry box provided. These can be purchased from the clubroom and must be handed in 10 minutes prior to the commencement of each nights' events. To assist our Recorders in the prompt seeding and calculation of results, the Club has purchased a computer and software package. This package also allows us to quickly update a swimmers personal best times. These will be regularly updated and placed on the notice board outside the Club Room. We would be most grateful if swimmers or parents could check these and place the correct entry time on their entry cards (to the nearest second will do). this will ensure that swimmers are placed in events along side other swimmers of similar ability. (Remember, a computer is only as good as those entering data into it. If you feel a posted result or personal best time is incorrect then please contact the Recorders as soon as possible. This will enable a quick response to rectify any problems). The age at which a swimmer competes in all of the summer point scores is the age he/she is on October 1. WINTER POINT SCORE At the end of each season the Club conducts its Championships. There will be an Age Championships and an Open Championships. These are designed to determine the best swimmers in the Club in each of the age groups. However, it is also the intention to encourage all swimmers in the Club to compete. For those not eligible, the Club will conduct a Minor Point Score to run in conjunction with these Championships. It is the responsibility of Club members to enter themselves in Club Championship events. The date for close of entries will be posted on the Club's notice board and advertised here > Club News. The Championships are run along the lines of a carnival with separate events for boys and girls. The Age Championships have single age groups with the age of entry being that at which the swimmer is on the first day of the Championships. The Open Championships are open to all swimmers but restrictions apply with regards to entry times and the number of entries received. The Minor Point Score is run along the same lines as No.1 Point Score, but only over distances up to 50m. Each competitor is entitled to swim one freestyle and one form stroke event each night. This point score is open to all swimmers not involved in the Club Championships.
BUYING CARDS Competitors will have only two cards for No.1 Points Score ie. a Freestyle Card and an Offstroke card. These will be paid for and collected from the recorders each week. Competitors will only be required to fill out the distance the they wish to swim in each event on the night. They will then place the card in the tin provided in the Club Room. Cost per swim is $1. Entry cards for No.2 and No. 3 Points Scores will
remain the same as for previous years. Cards will also be available
from the desk immediately outside the Club Room door. These go on
sale approximately 30 minutes prior to the commencement of points
score. The Over 18 Handicap cards also remain the same as
last year. If you have any problems filling out your cards please ask one of the recorders in the Club Room to help you. We are only too glad to do so. Having filled out your cards, place them in the tin provided on the Recorders desk inside the Club Room. Please ensure that all entry cards are with the Recorders at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled commencement of Points Score. HOW DO I FILL OUT AN ENTRY CARD? For the Recorders convenience different points scores have different colour entry cards. However all cards are identical in the way they are set out. Please ensure you fill out the correct card for each points score you wish to enter. Note: Enter one card per swim. Having filled out your cards, place them in the tin provided on the Recorders desk inside the Club Room. Please ensure that all entry cards are with the Recorders at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled commencement of Points Score. WHEN DO I SWIM? The
Marshall will call out the course of the night events over the
public address system. On hearing the call for the event you have
entered you should make your way to where the Marshall is assembling
swimmers. When the Marshall calls out your name you will receive
your entry card. On this will be written the Heat number and Lane
number you have been assigned. Immediately go to that lane and
stand behind the block. When it is the turn for your heat, the
Starter will call the event and heat number. The Referee will
then blow the whistle, upon which you should immediately take
your position on the block. MY CHILD IS NERVOUS OR IS A LITTLE FRIGHTENED BY THE WATER. WHAT HELP IS THERE? To assist our novice and younger swimmers to overcome initial fears of not knowing what to do, or being a little afraid of the water, we have a "buddy" system whereby older swimmers help out. If parents let the Recorders know when entering, they will assign a "buddy" to your child to take them through the marshaling system. If required they will also assign a safety swimmer to be in the water with the younger swimmers during their races. It can also be arranged to have less confident swimmers swim in the outside lanes. Please feel free to ask any Committee Members if you have questions regarding the point scores, or if you need help in filling out the entry cards. 2004 - 2005 POINTSCORE AND CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAMME
