Research Notes:All Luanne Spence Taylor's Notes:

The name was originally HERRMAN but in old records, spelled the name HARMAN. The spelling evolved during the mid-1800's. They were of the Lutheran religion in Germany but affiliated with the Moravian Church in NC that had been established by other German immigrants.

To quote one bit of history, by Joseph Carroll Baird from Virginia Beach, VA, perhaps exagerated.
"On 1726, Heinrich Adam, Jacob, Valentine, Mathias, George, Daniel and Johann HERRMAN or HARMON came to America traveling along the Rhine River (through 80 ports) on a ship 'Charlotte" from Rotterdam. They left early in the year of 1725 and landed in Philadelphia, PA Jan. 1726. They each owned land in Philadelphia Co., PA. They sated there about 10 years. All except Mattias started the trip south through MD, VA and in NC. Some stayed along the James River in VA."

A entry in the Moravian Church Diary in NC - 18 Mar 1767, Captain ENGLISH of New River reported ADAM HERRMAN died four weeks ago.
