October--2008

In Southern Oregon the month of October brings some changes. The rains start kicking in and the temps start cooling down. Along with all of that, the daylight hours get shorter. It is safe to say that summer is over.

There are still a few things you can do in your yard before the leaves start falling and the weather gets real nasty. For those of you who live in the milder areas of Southern Oregon, you can plant Pansy's---also Kale and Cabbage now to give some color to your yard thru out the winter.

Spring flowering bulbs can be planted now. You can plant them, up to when the ground gets frozen. Add some bulb fert or bone meal with them when you plant.

Try to avoid doing heavy pruning on your roses until spring time. If they are getting out of hand, you can prune them back a little, so that the snow will not break any canes. If you prune them back too much, you might have some die back on the canes. If you have a poinsettia and haven't started cutting back on the light--do so now. Now is a great time to plant shrubs and trees. The Nurseries are stocked up, so stop by your local nursery and see what they have.
