THE PITTSBURG BUFFALO COMPANY

The Pittsburg Buffalo Company was formed in 1900 and incorporated December 30, 1903 with assets of 7.2 million dollars. The Company records showed over 30,000 acres of unmined coal and were capable of producing 4,000,000 tons of coal annually. PBCo. was known before that as James Jones and Sons. That's my Great-Great-Grandfather, James Jones {1835-1912}, in the upper left. Their assets in today's market would have a value of over 144 million dollars.

The Pittsbug Buffalo Company followed the largest vein of bituminous coal in the country. They placed their mines on railroad lines after they sold all their interests as Jones and Sons including all the river coal rights. James Jones started his business strictly on the rivers and had the largest holdings in Pittsburgh at the time. A provision in the sale made it possible to ship by rail. Rather smart if you ask me!
