Well the 139th Gettysburg is over and it was quite an event this year. I think we all felt a duty to be there after the attacks on our country this past September 11th. With patriotism near an all time high in the United States there was no better place to be on the holiday weekend than Gettysburg. On the first Day the battle was a tactical where each side got to test and try thier manuvering skills. It was the hottest of the three days but the heat did not stop the participants from the hobby they so dearly love.
The second day there where two battles including the "Bloody Wheatfield". The Wheatfield fighting was fast and furious with hand to hand combat and several cowards running away from their call of duty. The Cavalry battle was very nice as they clashed with one another and some infantry. On the third day was the famous "Pickett's Charge" focusing on the angle at the High Water Mark. It started with a 20 minute cannonade from the confederates and then made the famous charge across the field only to be turned back at the High Water Mark.
Our group The 104th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Company C came out with good numbers and our three flags. We kept our flag from being captured and returned it on the second day. 22 of our 34 Military members and about 15 civilians showed up for a nice attendance. We recruited three new members (one which we trained on the spot) and a forth took an application home. We added to our Living History presentation by playing a game of Rounders with full teams. We had about 50 spectators at one time and several of the units camped nearby watched. Thanks to all the officers who kept everything running smoothly on and off the battlefield and to the Civilians who watched over the camp and kept things running there. Four of our members...Les Salsbury,Frank Marrone,Alex Vasold and Andrew Uhl were asked to be filmed for an upcoming Discovery Channel Documentary. The exposure it will bring to our group will be nice.
