Copse of Trees 1900

The Copse of Trees is located at The High Water Mark on the battlefield. It was Lee's Point of objective when he launched Pickett's change.

The men were to come out of the trees on Mc Phersons ridge, charge uphill over open ground for about a mile and aim for the trees to split the Federal line.

This clump of chesnut oaks was the converging point for the Confederate assault against Cemetery Ridge the afternoon of July 3. This is the High Water Mark of the Confederacy, the only section in the Union fortifications where the Rebels were able to penetrate, although unsuccessfully.

Between them was a fence, a stone wall and the union army under General Hancock. The charged failed and the Confederate army would never get more north than this point.
