This clump of chesnut oaks was the converging point for the Confederate assault against Cemetery Ridge the afternoon of July 3. This is the High Water Mark of the Confederacy, the only section in the Union fortifications where the Rebels were able to penetrate, although unsuccessfully. Between them was a fence, a stone wall and the union army under General Hancock. The charged failed and the Confederate army would never get more north than this point.
