Types of
Biomass
Biomass is any type or
sort of biological mass, from trees, to grasses, to ocean plants, to
small ocean Antarctic krill. Biomass, if burned correctly releases the
energy stored in chemical bonds in substances. It is a renewable energy
source that pollutes the environment more then all other renewable
energy sources. Biomass is not a great choice for this housing
community.
What is biomass?
(Extended)
Biomass
is any type of biological mass such as from crops to trees, to
animal waste and even humans’ garbage. Since everything needs sunlight
to survive biomass energy is really condensed solar energy.

How do we get energy
from biomass?
Burning any vegetation, will allow us to gather great amounts of
stored
energy. Biomass is a form of stored solar energy, by burning
plants; biomass uses the solar energy taken in by plants during
photosynthesis and turns it into energy. Biomass is sometimes
burned as fuel (once it is refined as biofuel) for electricity and
heat. In this method (the most common method) biomass is taken to a
biomass power plant and turned into usable energy.
Wood and other forest products are
the most commonly used form of biomass
Why didn’t we choose to
use biomass for this project?
Burning biomass releases almost as many harm toxins into the
environment as the burning of fossil fuels. While the emissions of
solar energy and wind energy are none, the price to produce energy from
biomass can be extremely high. The estimated cost to generate
electricity from biomass ranges from 5.2 to 6.7 cents per
kilowatt-hour. For biomass-fueled power plants, it is not always
certain that they will get a constant supply of forest products and
agricultural residues are not always certain so energy may not always
be readily
available.
