(Commentary by Mitch Carter)
The question is the relation between imagination and reality. We imagine an imaginary space in our head and call it our mind. In our mind we can imagine anything and everything. We can get totally lost and removed from reality with imagination, and we can influence and change reality with imagination.
We sometimes imagine things going on through emotionalism, irrationality, or confusion; as with jealousy, envy, and resentment. Likewise, we can imagine alternatives, options, scenarios, analogies, metaphors, and symbols to broaden, deepen, and define our understanding.
We imagine we are employing the poor and giving them a way to make a living, while we exploit them mercilessly to our advantage. The reality is we do not use our wealth to stop the suffering from poverty and oppression; we would be loving if we did. The fact that we imagine we are generous, giving, and loving belies reality.
We use our imagination to satisfy our desires; that is reality. To change reality we need to replace our desires of hate and selfishness with desires of love and giving.
