Spina Bifida is a congenital
defect of the spine and spinal cord. Like anencephaly, it is a neural tube
defect. The amount of damage to the spinal cord and nervous system varies from
person to person, depending on the region of the spine affected. The outcome of
the condition range from deformity of the back and legs, bowel and bladder
control issues, loss of control and sensation in the lower body including legs.
They may be clubfeet and problems walking, from minor to wheelchair dependant.
Some babies may also have hydrocephalus (extra fluid in the brain causing the
head to enlarge), which may need surgery. Some developmental delays may affect some
(not all) of the babies to variable degree.
