For the Metzgar family, ASCAP has been a part of the family for a long, long time. Janie West Metzgar (ASCAP) was orphaned on the steps of the Buckner's Baptist Orphange when she was 2 months and two weeks old. Placed on the west side of the chapel steps, early in the morning just before the services, the infant baby girl was left in a wicker potato basket with a small sign that said, "Janie, baby girl."

    Raised in the Baptist orphange in Dallas, Texas and later attending Baylor in Waco, Janie West Metzgar grew up to be a wonderful mother, singer/songwriter, and minister to all who knew her. Some of her early songs were the best known and perhaps the greatest song still sung today by churches everywhere is "Jesus Breaks Every Fetter." All her life, as an orphan, Janie felt like she had no one to love her until she found Christ as her personal Savior. Upon being "born again," she found a new inspiration and began to write some of her best works which were published originally as poems, and later as hymns. From 1929 until today 2009, there has been a member of the family in ASCAP.

    Through the years, the staff of ASCAP has diligently collected the royalties to the Janie Metzgar catalog as well as the songs of her singer/songwriter son, Robert Metzgar who resides in Nashville today. There are a lot of great songs in this catalog, but the one that seems to touch so many at funerals and church services is the first one, written when a small orphan was only twelve years old. Critics have said the song is too simple. Others have said that it should have been longer. But to those who sing it, they call and with tears say that nothing in the world touches their heart like the simple lines of a faith-filled orphan who wrote these words.

    Jesus, breaks every fetter. Jesus breaks every fetter. Jesus breaks every fetter....and He sets me free. Surely the comforting words of an orphan child said it best 75 years ago in one of the great classic hymns, Jesus Breaks Every Fetter.
