Benji Pt. 1

Hearts beating fast, breath uncontrollable, Michael & his family rushed through the crowded, cold, dark streets. Going to fast for 3:30 a.m., they ran through stop lights and stop signs and drove way over the speed limit. Parking the car in a mid-filled parking lot, Michael Garcia and his parents, David and Maria Garcia rushed out of the car, his parents a few feet behind. Dashing through the halls of the clean, brightly dull colored hospital, David and Maria tried to keep up with their 16 year-old son. Suddenly, Michael ran into a room, and stopping by the bed of his best friend, 17 year-old Benji McCormick. Michael's parents slowly entered the room, seeing Benji's parents' arms around Michael. Michael held Benji's hand and knelt down on the side of Benji's bed and began to cry as he looked on at his best friend slowly die. "I guess I should've never had old him to go with those guys without me," Michael said, sniffing. "It's my fault; if I had gone with him, we'd be going through this together, like it should be." Benji's mother kissed Michae's forehead and said, "Oh no, hone, its not your fault. We're so glad you weren't in that car. We're sure Benji is, too." Michael looked at Benji's heart monitor, and saw Benji's heart rate dropping. A few seconds later, Michael began to cry as he felt the life leave Benji's hand, and heard his heart monitor begin to ring. Doctors and nurses came into the room, shoving Michael away. Michael's parents cried as well, while walking into the hall. "Dad, I told you if you would have let me drive, we could have gotten here sooner." David sniffed and replied, "I didn't think you'd be able to see the roads in the dark." Michael walked back down the hall, wiping his eyes. Two weeks had passed, and Michael was upstairs reading his new skater magazine and listening to music when the phone ran. Maria answered the phone. "Hey Miss. G!" Benji's voice chimed. "Oh, hey Benji, whats up?" Maria replied. "Oh just calling Mike and telling him to meet me at the skate park in five minutes." Maria smiled. "Well hold on," she said, letting the memory of two weeks ago slip away. Maria yelled at Michael to pick up the phone. "Hey, Benny!" Michael said. "Hey Mike! Meet me at the skate park in 5 minutes, okay?" Benji exclaimed. "Alright. C-ya in a minute!" Michael said hanging up the phone. Michael rushed downstairs, putting on his left shoe. "Hey mom, pop, I'm going to the skate park with Benji." Maria, dicing lettuce for a salad, looked up and smiled. "Okay baby, have a good time!" David, reading the morning newspaper, looked up and said, "See you later, son." Michael waved bye as he rushed out of the door. A few seconds later, Maria looked up and turned to David, who was staring at Maria wide-eyed over the rim of his glasses and his newspaper. "Wait a minute," Maria began. "Isn't Benji..." she said, swallowing hard - "Dead?"
