His mother died in 1861 and this might have affected hisdecision to move west. The Civil War broke out and Abraham enlisted. On March 21, 1911, the ASHLAND TIMES GAZETTE published the following: "Abraham Lutz was born March 16, 1841, in beaver County, Pennsylvania. Hecame to Ashland County shortly before the breaking out of the Civil War;and at his country's call, he enlisted in the 102 O.V.I., August 12,1862, and faithfully performed the duties of a soldier until the close ofthe war, being mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, June 30, 1865. Inhis sixteenth year he was enrolled as a soldier of the cross, in whichfold he continued his relation until coming to orange Township, abouteleven years ago, when he, with his wife, united with the MethodistEpiuscopal Church of Orange, and was faithful to the end, which came onMarch 18, 1911, when he received an honorable discharge from the churchmilitant to be received into the church triumphant. A good soldier of hiscountry, a good soldier in Jesus Christ, his last battle has been foughtand won. Long and fierce the last conflict in the valley with the greatApollon, but he wavered not. "Now all is hushed. His suffering time is over, the toilsome journey oflife is ended. The last mile alone; sad and weary of earth, he journeyedin silence; since the companion of his years was taken from his sideabout sixteen months ago; but now the two are united, never again topart; and these once tired feet, as they journeyed together through lifehere, will press the golden streets of the New Jerusalem, for 'he keptthe faith' steadfast through all his sufferings to the very end. Note: Abraham Lutz's death certificate states he died of dropsy (an oldmedical term for the swelling of soft tissue due to the accumulation ofexcess water - either edema or congestive heart failure.) Abraham's Civi War papers are with the author. Abraham was a nurse duringthe war and his cape is with David McConnell, he is a great greatgrandson, and at this time, lives in Seattle, Washington.
