At some point Elias Austin Lutz was involved in a court battle withDaniel Smeltzer. The family farmed at Wakarusa for a time. They moved into Elkhart, andeven tried homesteading in northern Michigan, but eventually returned toElkhart. It was while Elias was filling out his time card at the Noyes CarriageFactory in Elkhart at 6:00 in the morning that he suffered a heartattack.
