He was buried in Jul 1975 in Prairie Street Mennonite Cemetery, Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. Oland Lutz was born in Wakarusa (Indian word for "Knee Deep in Mud"),Indiana in 1875. He was the son of Elias Austin Lutz and Sarah Emma MoyerLutz.

His father died when "Ollie" was 15. He had been raised in a strictLutheran/Mennonite home. When his father died, his mother, a pillar inthe local Mennonite Church provided a brand of discipline he found toorestrictive. He was a rebellious young man. Though he turned againstchurch attendance he considered himself a Mennonite to the end of hislife.

After the untimely death of his father he dropped out of school in orderto take on odd jobs with which he was able to help support the family.Eventually he found work with the Bell Telephone Company in Illinois andMichigan. He became a field supervisor.

He was a bit of a daredevil, by himself carrying whole telephone poles onhis back. On one occasion he called down from the top of the pole to hisco-workers, "Watch this!" Then he would drop to the ground, clamping hisboot spikes into the pole at the last possible second. In all the yearsof his dangerous work for the Telephone Company he only experienced acouple of broken ribs.

It was in Petoskey, Michigan that Oland met the great love of his life,Edna Leonah Greenhoe Dingman. Edna was trapped in a marriage to hercousin, who was emotionally unstable. Edna and Oland carried on alove/hate relationship for over thirty-five years. After Edna's divorce, she was courted by a local building contractor, and even though shemarried him, Oland continued to believe she belonged to him. One night hecame to the home of the newlyweds and challenged the new bridegroom to afight. He got the worst end of the deal. When the fight was over he leftand drove to his cousin's home in Alanson and they patched him up as bestthey could.

When her second husband died, Edna moved to Elkhart, Indiana, where Olandwas now living. Eventually they married, but only for a brief time.

Oland and Edna had two children together: Sharon Lee Aller born LeonaArlene Dingman, and Richard Lee Matson, born Richard Lee Dingman. In bothcases they bore the name of her first husband, as she was stilltechnically married to him at the time of these two children's births.

Oland was an accomplished musician - both his sons - Carlton (by hisfirst wife) and Richard (by Edna) inherited some of his musical ability.Though he didn't attend worship, he was often asked to sing at funerals.

He was not able to realize his greatest potential because of his problemwith alcohol, which caused him to binge drink, when he would disappearfor weeks at a time and no one would know where he was. Suddenly he wouldreappear at the front door of a family member acting as if nothing out ofthe ordinary had taken place.

Ordinarily Oland had a terrific sense of humor. In retirement he was avictim of Parkinson's Disease. The disorder made him shake so badly hewore the fabric through on the arm of his favorite chair.

He underwent experimental surgery at the University of Indiana Hospitalin Bloomington. Probes were placed in his brain to help stop the shaking, but it was unsuccessful.

One day the doctor came in to see him while Oland was struggling to gethis food into his mouth. When the physician inquired as to his condition,Oland quipped, "I'm MUCH better. I used to have to do this with my feet."

In exchange for the experimental surgery, Oland agreed to donate his bodyto the medical school upon his death. When that day arrived, theUniversity did not need the body, so family members pooled theirresources to provide him with a proper burial. The funeral was conductedby his brother-in-law, a United Methodist Pastor.
