Task 3

As he entered the warlord's room he noticed that the light was on. He looked around suspisciously, expecting anything to pop out. Instead he found a girl dressed in a school uniform sleeping on the bed. He noticed a small, red pendant around her neck.

"Um, hello?" Sage called, he didn't really want to wake her up. The girl blinked.

"Oh, I'm sorry," the girl said. She told Sage that her name was Hitomi. She claimed that she hadn't really been asleep but Sage didn't fall for it.

"So, what task do you have for me?" Sage asked.

"Well, I haven't really thought of that yet. Hmmm, let me see," the girl thought for a moment. "Bring me the staff of the one you call The Ancient. You must get it here and place it under this pillow without making a sound."

Sage thought this a somewhat complicated task but was willing to try it,"Alright, I'll do it."

Sage walked to The Ancient's room. He wondered whether he'd actually find the staff unguarded. He entered he dark room and could hear the soft snoring sounds of the Ancient One. It would have been so simple to wake the Ancient and ask him for help, but Sage wanted to win this game alone. He made his way to the side of the Ancient's bed by the pale glow of moonlight filtering through the curtains. He saw a glitter of metal and headed toward it. He lifted the pole carefully and felt slight resistance. Sage pulled harder and the resistance gave out. The pole stayed silent. Sage headed quickly but carefully back to Kale's room.

"Hmm, close but not quite. You might want to get that cord replaced though," Hitomi began to giggle.

"What cord? And what's so..." Sage looked in his hand to find a lamp. A cord with frayed wires dangled at the end.

Sage returned to the Ancient's room and looked carefully for a new gleam of metal. He spotted the shine he had been waiting for. He imagined that he felt his Kanji ball grow slightly warmer in his pocket. He felt the metal of the staff, sliding his hand all the way to the bottom to make sure that there was no cord. He lifted the staff gently and placed the lamp in its stead. He tiptoed to the door.

What Sage didn't know was that as he moved across the room with the lamp, the frayed cord had attached itself to the rug creating an obstacle across the doorway that was quite capable of tripping a Ronin in the dark.

Sage continued to tiptoe and his foot caught on the cord. Putting his free arm forward, Sage managed a gentle fall. The rings of the staff remained still. Sage slid his foot from under the cord and carefully climbed to his feet. The Ancient laughed silently.

Sage walked stealthily towards Kale's room. White Blaze trotted up the stairs and rubbed against Sage's leg.

"Not now," Sage said pushing the tiger away. White Blaze didn't like this. He circled Sage as he walked, every now and then making an attempt to go through his legs.

"Stop it White Blaze," the large cat stalked away and Sage continued slowly. He never really had anything against White Blaze but this evening his patience for the animal was wearing thin. He entered Kale's room and headed toward the bed.

"Well done so far," said Hitomi. "Now you have to get it under the pillow."

"I know," said Sage, slightly annoyed. He lifted the pillow and carefully placed the staff on the bed. He then put the pillow on top and turned to Hitomi.

"Very good. Here's your letter," Hitomi handed him a blue-mettallic letter "H". Sage took the letter and headed to Dais's room.
