October 23, 2004 - Saturday

Rainy on and off today.

What a day. First things first. The earth moved today. A lot. Between 6:00pm and 7:00 pm tonight we had several earthquakes. They were about a level 3 here. The building was swaying and windows were rattling, but no damage was done around Tsuruoka (to my knowledge). However, Niigata got hit pretty hard, the quakes were a level 6. The shinkansen was derailed and several roads have been damaged. A few houses were destroyed too. There was an aftershock here around 7:50(mild), and there were more aftershocks in Niigata. They were more severe I think. This happened just after the typhoon so Japan is having an interesting time of it, Mother Nature wise.

Back to more mundane things, my life! This morning when I left for work it was raining hard. So, I ran back into the house to get my raincape. When I'd put it on and gone back outside the rain had subsided. It didn't rain the entire way to my school, so I probably looked like a right idiot with my Disneyland raincape on, pedalling furiously to get to work on time!

Work was weird today. My first three classes all came so I was hopping for the first three hours, then nothing. Seriously. I was scheduled for 4 more classes...2 doubles and neither of the students came. They did notify the school so I guess that it's okay, but I still had to stay at school. When the earthquakes hit us I didn't really know what to do. At first I was going to run outside, but I went back for my purse. I know you aren't supposed to, but I didn't want the hassle of having to get myself a new alien registration card if the building crashed around my head! Japanese bureaucracy is not fun.

After work, Fumihiko took me to Cocos for dinner. We had a nice time. He told me that he has taken tomorrow off work. I was a bit surprised because I had planned a girly day of cleaning, laundry and maybe my long delayed facial. But, no. Unless I can talk him into a facial masque! I guess I can try!

When we came home we watched the news for a bit. I didn't have any idea that the earthquakes were as bad as they were. I was quite surprised.

We put on a video...While You Were Sleeping. Fumihiko had never seen it, and he watched it without subtitles. That's so great. His English is so much better these days. I bawled as usual. I used to be Lucy, I really did. Bill Pullman is so great in this movie and just seems like the perfect guy. Sandra Bullock is wonderful as Lucy, except it's a bit hard to imagine that someone so beautiful could be so lonely.

Anyway, that was my day today. Hopefully there won't be any more earthquakes. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Night night!
