A Return to Forever

Chapter Thirteen

The morgue was silent except for the humming of the refrigerators and the sounds of Natalie's heartbeat and breathing. The grand pause in conversation that made Nick so nervous ended with both Natalie and Janette exclaiming "Nick!" and "Nicola!" in unison. He could not help but wonder what had passed between these two while he had been gone. They glanced at each other with conspiratorial smiles, adding to his unease.

"Comparing notes?" He bantered, fighting the desire to excuse himself and run the other way. The two grinned knowingly, enjoying his discomfort.

"Let us say, we had you in common, and were sharing memories," Janette lied blithely, watching him squirm with some mischievous joy.

"We're just kidding, Nick. Janette was patiently waiting for me to finish my work, and for you to arrive." Natalie relented, but her grin did not waver. Mentally, she added got you back, this time. She enjoyed the revenge for her earlier scare.

"On a serious note," said Janette, "we decided to meet here because LaCroix is much less likely to have eyes and ears here in this laboratory. I know of the project you are both interested in. I came from Montreal in the hopes that it was not a hoax. If it is true, you both know why I would be interested in changing the past." She paused, searching for the right words. "Nicola came to see me at the Raven, and talked with LaCroix. There is a good chance he knows of this experiment, and may interfere as he has in the past. I am concerned that he may know I am involved, in which case he will be doubly vigilent, since he is adamant about Nicola's influence on me. We must be very, very, careful, for even if Lucien does not involve himself, there are always the Enforcers, who would not take kindly to one of us seeking to end our immortality.

"We have another problem," Nick added grimly, "Tracy gave me a report of the "security breach" we reported earlier. It was done quite professionally. Not a hair; not a fingerprint; nothing out of place except for what little shuffling and redealing Nat noticed with her pens and pencils. If there is a sample of my blood missing, then whoever went through this place knows about me, and knows all about our special relationship. You are in grave danger, Natalie, and I can't help being uneasy about GenSearch as our number one suspect."

Natalie looked thoughtful. "If so, that would explain their complete reproduction of this lab, right down to the blood bags." She stopped herself from mentioning that she had saved that blood bag he had drunk from the very first night they met. It was a little too personal and embarrassing for her to admit that in front of Janette, especially.

"It stinks of a set-up," said Nick, "and while I would love to believe this could be the answer to everything, I can't help a gut feeling that these people want me as a lab rat. To find out, we may have to play along. As dangerous as they may be, Nat, I want you to make an appointment for us to meet with them, to discuss their project." She began to interrupt, but he held up his hand. "If, as you say, they are sincere, then we might go through with this, but I don't want to be the subject of a blackmail scheme, especially with you involved."

"Janette, could you stay with Nat and make sure she is safe? There is an outside chance, if these people are untrustworthy, that they will stoop to using her against me."

Janette made a face. "Nicola, this may not work. If they know what we are, they may be prepared for us. Staying with Natalie may only put her in more danger."

Nick sighed. "Janette, I know of only one other place that would be safe for her, but who would protect her against LaCroix? No, I think the only safe system in this case is the buddy system. I will be investigating these people from the other end, but I can't do it here, and I need to make sure they don't know I'm doing it. That means I need you two in a safe place, together, so I can work alone, incognito."

"And what if they check out, Nick?" Natalie rubbed her arms, thinking of the possibilities. "What if the reason they reproduced this room so completely was to prove to me that what they are doing is truly possible, and they are interested in you only because you are their main hope of actually succeeding? If you go through with this experiment, what then?"

"I'm afraid," said Nick, "we will have to cross that bridge when we come to it. If I seem skeptical, Nat, it's because too many have offered me miracle cures in the past. All too often, they act like faith healers, blaming the victim when the experiment goes wrong because he or she 'didn't have enough faith.' I will do what I must to become a mortal again, but I don't want anything to happen to you.

"A better question is 'what if LaCroix is involved?' " Janette added. "If he knows of this experiment, and it sounded like he had when you were talking with him at The Raven, we may find something has happened to the two scientists you contacted. You had best be careful, Nicola, lest you are caught between LaCroix and these mortals."

"Point well taken," Nick said. "I need to go now, before someone notices I dropped in. We need to keep any planning meetings short, and discreet. I'll talk to you later, when I can."

With that, he was gone, leaving only a slight breeze behind. Janette shook her head. "I used to be able to move like that," she said wistfully. "Becoming mortal and then once more becoming a vampire was like starting over. I will stay with you until your shift is nearly over and others are beginning to come in, but I must be gone before dawn. It will be hard enough to explain my absence to LaCroix, without having to call and tell him I am spending the day somewhere else. I do not wish to make him more suspicious than he already is.

Nat merely nodded. She had too much on her mind to think of a good response.
