A Return to Forever

Chapter Six

The moment Nick entered the Raven, he was assaulted by the various sensations of several of the vampires that frequented the club. Comfortably, he glided down the stairs, and navigated a path between the contestants on the crowded dance floor. Walking towards the bar, he motioned for the bartender's attention.

"Where's LaCroix?" The bartender immediately placed a napkin and a glass in front of Nick, and began to pour from one of the bottles containing the special vintage that LaCroix kept for only himself and his special friends. Sensing Nick's mood and not wishing any trouble, the bartender spoke cautiously.

"The boss had to go downstairs for a little while. Have a drink on the house, and I'll let him know that you're here." After filling the glass, he quickly disappeared, leaving Nick with his drink and surrounded by the sounds of the loud music and colored lights. With nothing else to do, he lifted the delicate glass and watched the Raven's colored lights change the tempting fluid to numerous tints of red. The varicolored hues entertained him as he gently swriled the liquid around the glass.

His amusement abruptly ended as he became distracted by an overwhelming sensation. Looking up, he saw his "father" approaching, but he was recognizing more than just their bond. Somewhere nearby, he could feel another. A feeling almost as strong as the pull between himself and LaCroix. Shifting in his seat, he tried to look beyond his master to discover what powerful being emitted such a sensory impression.

An amused smile crossed his father's lips as he saw the glass of bloodwine in his son's hand. "Quite good isn't it, Nicholas?" Quickly, Nick replaced the glass on the bar, having forgotten about his brief game of watching the colors change.

"I don't know, I haven't had any."

"But you will. So pray tell, Nicholas, what criminal stalks the fair streets of Toronto tonight, that brings you here to have me summoned?"

With the younger vampire's focus diverted by the strong unidentified perception of the other unknown vampire's close connection, he forgot why he had come to see LaCroix. His entire being was tuned to the other that he felt nearby, and he could not clear his mind.

Mindlessly, he picked up the waiting glass, and drank all it contained in one swift gulp. It was then that the comprehension of what he felt became clear. With renewed awareness, he stared directly into LaCroix's eyes. "Where's Janette?"

"Janette is quite indisposed at the moment. She has returned to me...to the family! I suggest that you not fill her head with your unrealistic dreams of becoming mortal. It is this which drove her away earlier. In fact, I am glad you dropped by. I wish to speak to you of this dangerous experiment in which you intend to take part."

Nick was momentarily startled, but asked insistently... "Where is she? I want to see her."

"Janette will contact you in her own time," Lucien replied. The telephone rang, interrupting him. Irritated, Lacroix answered the telephone with a tense "What is it? Can that not be achieved without me? I am engaged in a meeting. All right! I shall be there in a moment!!!!!!!!!" He slammed the phone down.

Nick demanded once more "Where is she?"

"Now, what is it humans say? It will be worth the wait ?!? I shall return, and when I do I will call Janette for our family reunion. Now, you must excuse me. There is a problem in the bar."

Lucien LaCroix exited the room.
