THE BOOKS OF DUNGIVEN

There has been a book of Dungiven for hundreds of years. There is little known about the first one, since it is so old and we do not have it. The second book of Dungiven however, is a brilliant creation and has been issued over a period of thirty years in the form of a parish magazine (Benbradagh Magazine). It contained true stories, 'children's thoughts', historical articles and valuable information (a diary of each important day in Dungiven for every year was included). The last issue was printed and issued in 2000, and there was the chance for all of the books that people had collected over the years to be bound together as one book. So that was done, and it was named the Second book of Dungiven

In 2002 there was a new magazine committee set up to create another magazine to be issued every year, following in the footsteps of the Benbradagh Magazine. It was called The Winding Roe and the first issue was released at Christmas 2002.

Released Only this year (2003) was a book named 1969 A Turbulent Year in Dungiven, by Aidan Hegarty. It told of troubled times in the town, times which we thankfully never see anymore.

Dungiven Days by A. Bunn was published for local sale in the town a number of years ago. It also told stories of Dungiven's past and contained historical facts about the area.

ORDNANCE SURVEY Memoirs of Ireland PARISHES OF CO. LONDONDERRY IV 1824, 1833-5 (Roe Valley Upper: Dungiven)------ A very valuable book for those studying Dungiven during the Ogilbys' time (Pellipar Estate), the Ordnance Survey book has records of everything recordable in that particular period of history.
