BANAGHER Banagher Dam is a water reservoir supplying most of the water consumed in county Derry. Below the dam, in the glen, there is now a nature reserve and picnic site. The glen has been planted with the largest forest in county Derry. It is renowned for its magnificent show of wildlife throughout the year and its beauty attracts walkers and tourists throughout Ireland (and further a field) and has been the inspiration of a well-known poet local to the area called Brian McGinnis.
Banagher Glen is home to lots of different plant and animal species. Bird watchers across the country come here to see Banagher’s native birds; and tadpoles and frogs attract young children. These are what give the area its beauty. Everyone enjoys Banagher's famous bluebells too! WILDLIFE: Spring, Summer (Autumn & Winter to come).
More Information Banagher glen is nestled in the heart of the Sperrin Mountains not far from the main Derry- Belfast A6 road. It is five minutes from Dungiven town and practically at Feeny Village’s doorstep. It is very accessible. The gate leading from the foot of the Glen right up to the dam is locked for most of the year but is opened in the summer months from 9am-9pm. There are two large car parks/ picnic areas one at the Old Filter House and the other quite near the gate. The path to the dam follows the river for quite a bit of the walk (which is approx. 2.5 -3 miles long). It takes you through woodland, moor land and forestry. There are also boards with information throughout the walk telling of wildlife, legends and images of maps are also provided.
NOTE: No info etc. of the dam yet
