Conservationist of the Year - Doug Thiel

Over the years we have presented this award to individuals who go far beyond our expectations for contributing to the preservation, conservation and natural beauty of Grosse Ile. We look community-wide for nominees, but sometimes we can't overlook the exemplary contributions of particular board members.

Doug Thiel was named the recipient of the 2009 Conservationist of the Year Award for contributions that covered a wide-range of accomplishments. He was honored for his project leadership, for his recruiting of new board members, for his regional activism in the area of conservation and environmental protection, for his guidance, wisdom and patience in teaching new members of the board, and for mentoring students, such as our Eagle Scout... all in 2009 alone.

While some people may accomplish much in a multidimensional way over the course of years, it's rare to accomplish so much on so many fronts in such a short time span. The Conservancy and the downriver region have all benefited from Doug's conservation work and we are all grateful for his community dedication.
