A very important calendar event in PNG is this "Mask Festival". For quite sometime now I have been on the look out for some good photographs of the fascinating facial masks used here in PNG. My futile attempts in Port Moresby, paved way for this trip to Rabaul (Frangipani Town) an Island which is quite far from the capital.  This festival is yet another tourist attraction  which brings people from all parts of the world who enjoys and respects other cultures. No exception to the above elite list, myself and my wife were there to capture some of the best moments.

This is only part of the great scenic view of RABAUL, which was badly destroyed after a volcanic eruption in the year 1994.  This view is captured from the Volcanic observatory situated up in the hill. It is such a lovely town adorned with so many Frangipani trees giving that unique fragrance and beautiful look.

This is the typical traditional mask of PNG. Papua New Guinea is divided into many provinces and each and every province has its own unique identity in terms of culture, language, costumes and ofcourse MASKS. What you see above is the Mask from the East Sepik province of PNG. Carefully observe the way in which the above person has dressed. I might soon work out on a portrait with this photograph. My favourite pick!

Another  example of the PNG skill which demonstrates their patience, love towards art, affinity towards their culture and a passion towards demonstrating it to the world. See the famous feathers of "Bird of Paradise" which are the highlight of PNG and ofcourse their national symbol.

Oh! What a display of colour and culture. It was a wonderful experience for me to have been there during this festival and take some good photographs. Observe the ornaments which are made from tusks of pigs and the intricate and beautiful work behind their head which is made from cane. I am told that these people use only natural substances for dyeing the fibres and their body. Peope who are in Mask are called as "MAIRA"

A pride look from a proud Papua New Guinean who was one among the many who were there to display to the world their cultural extravaganza.  The big shell you see is called "KWALER". The ear rings are made out of shell and a pair would cost around US$150 and they are called "EIEWA". The band in the arm is called "HAU". The arrangement in the mouth is called "KARAWUT"

Another mask from the Sepik region. See closely the beauty of the costume and the the hidden vigor of the person in showing their cultural diversity. This mask attracted a lot of photographers.  The spear they hold in the hand is called "VIE". Masks are generally worn during specific occasions.

This is the famous "TUMBUVAN RITUAL" which was part of the closing ceremony of the 2002 PNG Mask festival held in Rabaul.  If you are pondering as to how they can see, believe me that there was a instructor who was guiding them through directions. By the time I took this snap it was drizzling heavily and the ground was packed with people from both local and abroad.

Credits to the OLYMPUS ZOOM camera. What a shot! ( I do a fair bit of self appreciation...) This was the much awaited event in the Mask festival which is simply called the "FIRE DANCE" (Obvious !!) I did regret not taking my tripod,  because this event was not in the schedule. I came to know that this dance is performed with great devotion and sincerity. Was a pretty good experience for myself and my wife who watched this event after a solid 5 hours wait from 7.30pm. Kudos to the people of Rabaul for showing such remarkable patience and discipline.
