Bill Albert, founder and Fearless Leader of UNIT, issues a statement each month describing his feelings on the state of Doctor Who fandom in Iowa. He calls these messages his "Ramblings".
Here is his message for June 1999
From The 9th Doctor: Hi everybody! We had two subs and two unsubs to UNIT this month. So we are holding even. I put the UNIT page on the Doctor Who Web Ring and submitted us to the Doctor Who Alliance Club listing. I hope that will keep the name going. If anyone is making it to CONVERGENCE feel free to pass the addy a long some where. SFFN on IPTV: BLAKES 7: Well, this run of Blakes 7 is down to single digits. No word yet on whether it will be rerun again or replaced by something else. Some people are hoping for more Who episodes a week. *hint, hint, hint* If anybody had a case of DE-JA-VIEW* last week during "Assassin" it was justified. The actor who played the slave who befriends Villa was Richard Hurndall. He was the 1st Doctor on the Five Doctors 20th Anniversary special. *DE-JA-VIEW=Subcategory of De-Ja-Vue (sp?) The feeling you've seen that person on TV before. DOCTOR WHO (No Dr.) The Mutants starts this weekend. There are some episodes that I remember very well from seeing them years ago. There are some episodes that I know I have seen but have almost no memory of. I remember the Marshall and Skybase but practically nothing else. It'll be like seeing it again for the first time! This was the episode that Salman Rushdie mentioned in the infamous "Satanic Verses" (sp?) book. Does anyone remember the exact quote? DOCTOR WHO: THE EIGHTIES: This book is a large sized reference to the developments in Doctor Who in the 1980's. It's an excellent look at how and why some things get done on a TV series with lots of interesting and surprising facts. There are some cute little things like the fact that one member of the tour group in the castle in Silver Nemesis was Nicholas Courtney. Cool. It also said that Lance Parkin had originally submitted a script called Lungbarrow for Sylvester McCoy's Doctor. It was rejected by JN-T because he felt that they were moving the series toward bringing the mystery back into the character and Lungbarrow, whcich took place on Gallifrey, gave to much info. Lungbarrow was the LAST 7th Doctor novel that Virgin published before the BBC took the franchise back. It also talkas about how it was the events of TWO DOCTORS that caused the Doctor to choose to become a vegetarian. I don't remember this actually being said in the episode but I have heard it is a big part of the novels. Perhaps our resident NA expert can tell us a bit more about this. *Cue Kel* SEPTEMBER UNIT MEETING: Trying to get an exact date settled. Right now I was thinking of, other than the chance to get to know each other, we could have a group viewing of ICE WARRIORS and some footage from VISIONS 98. For the people who are really in it for the long run we could catch some other vids and a Red Dwarf or two. Any requests? UNIT WEB PAGE: Finally getting at work updating it. I'm adding about two dozen quotes and updating the Who History page. Sorry the poll ended up being two months long instead of one. I will also finish that and start a new one over this week. I will have everything updated by the end of the extra long weekend.
