Bill Albert, founder and Fearless Leader of UNIT, issues a statement each month describing his feelings on the state of Doctor Who fandom in Iowa. He calls these messages his "Ramblings".
Here is his message for May 1999
From: 9th DoctorJust in the nic of time, eh? Well, I was thinking of Day of the Daleks and wanted to wait until everyone had seen it. If anybody has any other ideas or opinions I'd love to chat about them. SPOILERS If anyone wants to chat about a story that hasn't been shown recently that's great. But I have realised that there are a lot of knew people on the list who aren't familiar with the history of the Doctor and are lucky enough to be experienceing them for the first time. Keep that and mind, KO? PHANTOM MENACE I only caught one actor link between Star Wars: TPM and Who. The voice of Jar Jar boss, the big one who spit a lot, was provided by Brian Blessed. He was King Yrcanos in Trial of a Time Lord. According to the novelisation he ended up living with Peri in California. PLANET OF THE DALEKS Did anyone really like this story? I kept thinking it might have been better if it just weren't so long. Or, better yet, since it was so connected to Frontier In Space to just have had one epic length adventure. DAY OF THE DALEKS This story has long been one of my favorites. But I do admit that, after all these years, there were some important bits that had slipped my mind. Strangely enough I still really like it but for different reasons. There is a scene that really messes with the Doctor's opinions of weapons and violence though. When they are escaping from styles house the Doctor has one of the rebels guns and zaps one of two Ogrons out of existance. That was definately out of character for the Doctor. The two were coming up along the side of the house and he could easily out run them so they were no threat to him or anyone. A bit of character lost in the excitement of the scene? A lot of people have used this is an example of whether or not the Doctor should go back in time and change history, i.e. saving Adric. The arguement usually is "He did it in DOTD so why couldn't he do it later?" Upon viewing it again I have realised it is a good example of why he SHOULDN'T go back and change things that happen. On closer inspection I was reminded that it wasn't the Doctor Who was trying to change history but the rebels and they had already messed things up. The "temporal paradox" they had created had caused the wars and given the Daleks the chance to take over. CURSE OF PELADON (minor spoiler) In, AFAIR, the last episode the Doctor actually refers to himself as Doctor Who. It'll be interesting to see that again and see if I can remember it correctly. Take Care Bill the listmom
