In Brief: This document on religious freedom in Australia written by Mrs. Rona Joyner on behalf of the Queensland Festival of Light/Community Standards Organization for submission to the Human Rights Sub-Committee of Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.   Web Release 12/12/2000

This 55-page submission is concerned with Australia's Failure to Promote and Protect the Freedom of Christianity, Christian Beliefs, Gospel Preaching in Australia, and ultimately freedom of speech.

Mrs. Rona Joyner produced this document for consideration by Parliament prior to the drafting of legislation designed to ensure tolerance for the religious beliefs of minority groups in Australia.   The whole idea of passing a Racial and Religious Tolerance Act would seem to be unconstitutional in that the Federal Government is prevented by Section 116 from passing laws concerning religions.   Section 116 is thus our constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion in Australia.

If legislation is passed contrary to Section 116 it will have the effect of stifling Christianity in our laws, and also Christian evangelism in Australia, because no one will be allowed the freedom of speech to try to change another person's beliefs.

Far from ensuring freedom of religion and belief, any such legislation will ensure government control of the Christian beliefs, contrary to our historic position that the Gospel must be preached, free from any political controls.   Freedom of speech will be the victim of any attempt by government to support by legislation religions other than Christianity.

Our Nation's Undergirding Christianity (the basis of our legal system and Common Law), which is supposed to be protected by Section 116 of the Constitution, is losing its freedom to be an influential force in the law and life of Australians.

This will be noticed regarding political issues and the application of Biblical principles in preaching or in the public forum.

[Footnote:- I believe that some legislation has been passed as a result of Downer's Inquiry into Freedom of Religion and Belief.   I understand it is called Racial and Religious Tolerance Act, or something like that. RJ]
