Illinois 53 is, like IL59, a route running north-south through the western suburbs of Chicago. It goes from Long Grove to Joliet, then parallels I-55 until Gardner. This stretch from Joliet southward used to be part of US66.

It passes through these towns: Long Grove, Palatine, Schaumburg, Itasca, Glendale Heights, Glen Ellyn, Lisle, Woodridge, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Crest Hill, Joliet, Preston Heights, Elwood, Wilmington, Braidwood, Godley, Braceville, then IL53 ends by wrapping around the south side Gardner and running into I-55.
