Illinois 72 is a route across northern Illinois, running from northern Carroll County east all the way to the far north side of Chicago. It passes through some of the northwest suburbs, including Schaumburg and Dundee.
Intersections from west to east:
IL73 near Lake Carroll and between Lanark and Pearl City
IL72 joins IL26 south and east
IL26 breaks off at Forreston
IL2 joins IL72 east, from the south
IL72 breaks off of IL2 in Byron and crosses the Rock River
IL251 near Davis Junction
IL23 joins it east in Genoa
IL23 leaves to the north
IL72 joins IL47 north as US20 also joins IL47 north, but from the east (so going north on 47, you'll see signs that say "west 20" and "east 72" at the same time)
Then, IL72 departs to the east, as UL20 departs west and IL47 continues north
IL31 near where West Dundee meets Sleepy Hollow
IL68 at East Dundee
IL25 at East Dundee
IL59 near S. Barrington
IL58 at Hoffman Estates
IL83 joins IL72 east (from the south) for about a block in Elk Grove Village
Then IL72 departs to the southeast
IL72 has an interchange accessing I-90 but only toward Chicago (so only traffic going west on I-90 can get to IL72, and IL72 traffic can only access I-90 eastbound)
IL72 intersects IL171 at that route's northern end
IL72 terminates in the east at IL43 in Chicago.
