Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Engineers' Week is held annually in February during the week of George Washington's birthday, who was not only the first President of the United States, but who has also been described as the first American engineer and surveyor.
National Engineers' Week aims to improve public understanding and appreciation of the engineering profession and technology. For the year 2002, Engineers' Week will be observed in Hawaii and the rest of the United States from 17 to 23 February. The different activities being planned for Engineers' Week include: The Kick-off Luncheon, Display of Exhibits by participating societies and technical organizations, and the Banquet. One important highlight of the Engineers' Week Banquet is the giving out of the following four awards to outstanding engineers:
It will also be during the banquet that the new set of officers for the HAWAII COUNCIL OF ENGINEERING SOCIETIES (HCES) will be inducted into office. COMMITTEES FOR ENGINEER'S WEEK 2002
For this year, the following are the different committees created by the HCES and the different member societies who have been tasked to work on these committees:
GOVERNOR'S PROCLAMATION OF ENGINEER'S WEEK
On the thirteenth day of December, 2001, Benjamin J. Cayetano, Governor of the State of Hawaii, signed a Proclamation designating February 17 through 23, 2002 as Engineers Week in Hawaii. The governor has also encouraged the citizens of the State to consider the many ways the quality of their lives have been enhanced through the efforts of engineers (NOTE: An ADOBE ACROBAT READER is needed to download the Governor's Proclamation).
MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION OF ENGINEER'S WEEK
Mayor Jeremy Harris of the City and County of Honolulu proclaimed the week of February 17 to 23, 2002 as NATIONAL ENGINEER'S WEEK in the City and County of Honolulu. The Proclamation was signed by Mayor Harris on February 8, 2002. The mayor also extended his deep appreciation for the outstanding contributions of the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies and the thousands of engineers in the State of Hawaii and wished them a memorable celebration (NOTE: An ADOBE ACROBAT READER is needed to download the Mayor's Proclamation).
The signing and presentation of the Proclamation was held at 10:30 a.m. at the Mayor's office at city hall. Present to accept the Proclamation where the following HCES officers and representatives: Ather Dar, HCES Chairman; Tony Lau, ASCE Representative; James Bersson, SAME Representative; and Juny La Putt, FALEA Representative .
2002 ENGINEERS WEEK EXHIBIT
One of the important highlights in the observance of Engineers Week for the year 2002 is the engineering exhibit competition. The purpose of the exhibit and competition is to increase public awareness and appreciation for the engineering profession. For this year, the Kahala Mall Shopping Center has been selected as the venue to display the exhibits. The beginning day for this activity started on Saturday, February 16 and will extend up to Saturday, February 23 which is the last day of Engineers Week.
Credit is given to the HCES Exhibit Committee for coming up with this activity which have been planned and coordinated for a number of months back. The project was a joint undertaking of the Structural Engineers Association of Hawaii (SEAOH), the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). These member societies are represented by Irving Hirata, Bob Lohaus, and Wayne Kawano, respectively. There will be three awards that will be given out for the winning exhibit entries. The winners will be judged on presentation, technical merit and on how the exhibit is able to promote the engineering profession. The awards will be given out during the Engineers Week Banquet on February 22, 2002.
The participants of the exhibit competition included the following: The Hawaii Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Department of Transportation Services of the City and County of Honolulu, Institute of Transportation Engineers, and the Structural Engineers Association of Hawaii. Shoppers at Kahala Mall had the opportunity to see for themselves the different exhibits. Assorted photographs were taken last Sunday afternoon (February 17, 2002) at the designated exhibit area of the mall.
THE 2002 ENGINEERS WEEK KICK-OFF LUNCHEON
The Honolulu Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) sponsored the 2002 Engineers Week Kick-Off Luncheon. Invited as the guest speaker for the luncheon was Hawaii's Lieutenant Governor Mazie K. Hirono who made her speech right after the "Warriors Buffet." She was introduced by Brig. Gen. Ronald Johnson who also presented the Lieutenant Governor with a gift right after delivering her speech before a crowd consisting mostly of military engineers who are currently stationed in Hawaii.
The Kick-Off Luncheon was held at the Banyan Tree Showroom of the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki. A short program was prepared and Commander Brian M. Scott of SAME gave the opening remarks while Mr. Ed Sproat was asked to do the invocation. The welcome address was made by Ather Dar who is the chairman of the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies and he also later gave the closing remarks.
A number of photographs were taken during the luncheon and are portrayed in this Website to give those who were not able to attend the affair an idea as to what transpired during this activity.
THE 2002 ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET
The Engineers Week Banquet at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel on February 22, 2002 was the main highlight of the celebration of National Engineers Week in Hawaii. More than 200 guests attended the banquet and invited as guest speaker for the occasion was Linda Lingle, a candidate for governor in the local elections scheduled on November 2002.
Four major annual awards were given during the banquet and the following were the recipients: Dr. Paul C. Yuen, HCES Lifetime Achievement Award; Wesley R. Segawa, Engineer of the Year; Tony C.G. Lau, Young Engineer of the Year; and Nguyen H. Phan, Student Engineer of the Year. For further details about the awardees, download the March 2002 edition of the WILIKI O HAWAII. It was also during the banquet that the new set of HCES officers were inducted into office by the guest speaker. For the year 2002-2003, the following were inducted: Ather Dar, Chairman; Richard Campbell, Vice-Chairman; Marites Shoji, Secretary; and Tony Lau, Treasurer.

HCES LOGO CONTEST
An invitation is extended to anyone interested to join the HCES Logo Contest. The contest has a prize award in the amount of $200.00 which will be given out during the Engineers Week Banquet on Friday, 22 Feb 2002 (6:00 pm) at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. The winner of the contest will be invited to receive the award during this affair. A free dinner is also included for the winner and his or her companion.
The winning Logo entry will be used in a banner to be displayed during HCES functions & activities, portrayed in the HCES Website and the HCES Newsletter, and for other purposes which are intended to represent and portray the Council. The logo will also be portrayed in the Souvenir Program which will be distributed during the Engineers Week Banquet.
For details about the Hawaii Council of Enginering Societies (HCES), this Website should give a good idea as to what the HCES is all about and help the contest participant in coming up with a design for a logo which would be most suitable for the HCES. Since there are only have a few days left before the Engineers Week Banquet on February 22, entries should be submitted not later than midnight of Wednesday, 13 February 2002.
Submitted entries should be:
- In PDF file format
- Designed to be camera-ready
- Rendered in color using 8.5"x11" size paper with white background.
- With an accompanying description of the logo entry.
The entry should be sent as an email attachment to the Chairperson, HCES Logo Contest at the following email address: junylaputt@yahoo.com. Each entry should bear the full name of the participant, his or her street mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address. Those participating will be allowed to submit not more than 3 different entries.
