The Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers (HSPE) is responsible for selecting annually the individual who will receive the Young Engineer Award. The candidate chosen must be a practicing professional engineer in the State of Hawaii and not more than 35 years of age. The technical accomplishments of the candidate and his or her professional, civic and community contributions are thoroughly evaluated. The award is conferred at the HCES Engineers' Week Banquet. As of the year 2001, a total of 18 engineers have already received the award with the first award given in 1984.

ELIGIBILITY

The following criteria shall be applied to eligibility:

  • The nominee shall be less than 35 years of age by January 1st of the year the award is to be made.
  • The nominee shall be a current practicing professional engineer in the State of Hawaii.
  • He or she shall be a current resident of the State of Hawaii.
  • The nominee need not be a member of the any society affiliated with the HCES.
  • The nominee shall not currently be a State Officer or Director for the HSPE.

SELECTION

The following point system is applied in the selection process:

  • Technical Accomplishment (Awards Received, Papers & Presentations, Major Projects Undertaken) - 30%
  • Professional History and Contributions (Positions Held, Professional Affiliations, Special Contributions to Profession & Special Recognition) - 35%
  • Civic and Community Contributions (Affiliations, Positions Held, Special Recognition Received) - 20%
  • Recommendation (Why the candidate is nominated) - 15%

Completed nomination forms must be postmarked no later than January 25 of the year the award is made and sent to: Young Engineer Of The Year Award, P.O. Box 3774, Honolulu, Hawaii 96812.
